Okay, it worked on my fourth try. For those interested, I actually did three things, so I’m not sure which one fixed it (I know, rather unscientific of me, but I did it for time’s sake). I 1) did a fresh boot of my computer, 2) installed the 1.5.1 update (I was using 1.5.0), and 3) trimmed a couple of seconds off the end of the video that was just black (I doubt that had anything to do with it).

UPDATE: The .m2v file actually is *not* complete–it’s got everything but about the last five seconds. Oh, and no audio either (I assumed it was normal for audio and video to be transcoded separately, but maybe I’m wrong?).
So, the question is: Why would Encore not like the last few seconds of my video? I am thoroughly perplexed.

Andre,
[Quote] “Time remapping layer process requires more than the ability to set keyframes. It further requires graphs where the Value and Velocity Time Remaps may be adjusted at keyframes.”
Regardless of whether or not it requires more than just a simple keyframe or two, if it were keyframeable, you’d be able time-remap a layer, as that’s exactly what keyframes are all about: adjusting from one setting to another over time.

Andre,
[Andre Gagnon] “Furthermore, the Speed/Duration setting in Premiere is not keyframable.”
Well, obviously, or you’d be able to do exactly what Aaron is looking to achieve: Setting a keyframe at the beginning of the clip for 100% speed and a keyframe at the end of the clip for 50% speed would result in a gradual slowing down from full to half speed.

Dave,
[Quote] “The only thing that occurs to me is that as the menu loops back to the start there is a very short period where the buttons do not work.”
Ummm…doesn’t that kinda apply to all menus–both motion and static? I assume you’re referring to the second or so it takes the player to get back to the beginning of the menu data on the disc, or perhaps there is some other issue with motion menus I’m not aware of?

Hey Bob,
Are you able to select a button and manually change its number in the Properties palate? Or does changing the number of one button change those of all the other buttons to that same number?

Hey Phil,
Is this a new MP3 you’re using (different from the other 7 or 8 DVDs you burned)? If so, perhaps there is something about it Encore doesn’t like. Try using a different MP3 file for the menus you’re having trouble with and see if it works. As for why Encore would reject the file, I have no clue (especially since converting to WAV doesn’t work either). Just a shot in the dark, but does Encore have a limit for how long a menu’s audio file can be? I’ve always used audio files right around a minute long for my menus, so I don’t know.
Anyway, if that’s not it, I don’t know what to tell you.

Hey Melvin,
Okay, so you’ve imported your file into the timeline. That’s really all that is actually required, but you may be getting those errors because a few things aren’t set. Try the following:
The timeline should have automatically been set to first play, but just to be sure, right-click on it in the Project window and choose “Set as First Play.” A little yellow circle with a play symbol (arrow pointing to the right) should appear on the timeline’s icon. If it was already set to first play, that symbol should already have been there and you needn’t worry about what I just described.
Next, click on the timeline in the Project window to highlight it, then go over and check out the Properties palate. For the End Action of the timeline choose “Stop.” For Menu Remote (when the user hits the “Menu” button on their DVD remote) you can either set it to “Stop” or to return to the beginning of your timeline. Click the little arrow on the right side of the Menu Remote field to choose.
Now go back to the Project window and click somewhere other than on the timeline to deselect it. The Properties window should change to those of the DVD itself, and one of the fields should be labeled “Title Button” (this is what happens when the user hits the “Title Menu” button on their remote). As with Menu Remote, set this either to stop the DVD or return to the beginning of your timeline (i.e. the first chapter marker); this is entirely a matter of your preference, as you do not actually have any menu to go to.
That should do it! If you have any more trouble, don’t hesitate to ask.

Hey Derrick,
I don’t believe it’s entirely fail-proof, as someone could probably break through it fairly easily, but Encore does have a copy protection option. Look in the Encore help files under “copy protection” to see what exactly it entails.
