Also do not forget about fractal Noise. When used in combination with displacement effects, you may be able to bend and twist it just like you need. CC Sphere and CC Cylinder may even allow you to create impact bubbles/ shockwaves. Then it’s just a matter of animating Offset and Evolution parameters in the Fractal Noise to get some motion.

Turn off the cache of your external drive (you should have a config utility somewhere to do that). It could well be the source of the problem. Windows treats QT files as data files and writes them in buffered mode whereas it sees AVIs as streams and writes them in burst mode (without caching).

AE is a 32 bit app and will never use more than 3 GB.

mask animation based on scanned-in drawings (rough sequences/ inbetweens as templates), probably with some 3D involvement using cartoony shading in a 3D program.

Not exactly sure what you are trying to do, but CC Composite or Walker Effects Composite have built-in blend modes that might be useful for your scenario.

You do all your stuff in a vertical comp and then nest it and rotate it back into a standard horizontal comp. There’s no magic there as the underlaying siganl processing doesn’t change and you still have to use standard formats for actually delivering the content.

November 25, 2006 at 1:37 pm in reply to: Question regarding using a Light Layer in AE7

Like Steve said – light doesn’t bounce off an edge that has a thickness of zero. Physically and mathematically impossible. The simple method woul be to duplicate your layer, erode it with Simple Chocker and use it as a matte on yet another duplicate of your layer. By using Blurs and Glows you can get some decent effects, but it won’t work in every situation. By offsetting the matte layer you can define the incidince angel of the light (on one side contours will becom fatter).

Neither is there a simple algorithm nor technique nor any magic plugin. The simple truth is that you do not have access to the actual pixels of a layer or mask shapes and thus never exactly get the proper dimensions on irregular shapes. I believe a while back Dan posted some simple code for a projection matrix based on using the acos() function, maybe you can dig it out and work from there. Other than that – like they say in “Battlestar Galactica” at one point: “Mark 1 eyeball.” ;o)
