If there was a problem with the motherboard, would all this be happening?

I can think of one possibility that would cause this and that is a bad memory RAM.

Try running the system diagnostic disk that came with your system first and loop it for a few hous to see if it can catch something.

  • [David Notowitz] “So how do I get 10.3.7 to install on my G4?”

You’ll need a generic copy of Panther to install on your G4. Those install disks that come with a new system won’t work on another system, purposely. Apple wants to sell upgrades!

There are deals on the internet for Panther now that Tiger has shipped.

  • I think 10.3.7 for a G4 and FCP HD is the best combination. I just came from there and now have Tiger and Final Cut Studio loaded on my dual 1.0 GHz MAC.

I settled on 10.3.7 on the G4 before the upgades because it seemed to be one of the most stable vesrions of Panther I have ever used for FCP.

[peter rooney] ” I’m determined not to get stuck in this ‘de-instal 7 re-insta;l 6 QT loop’

Save yourself grief and upgrade to Tiger first, then install the new apps. It is going to go smoother than trying to jocky with 10.3.9.

[Steve Lim] “Is there a way to bind a hotkey to launch some program from the dock?”

Perhaps using the new Automator feature in Tiger, but as far as earlier versions of the OS, I believe QuickKeys was the only program that could enable this type of keystroke scripting.

June 16, 2005 at 3:01 pm in reply to: Nvidia 6800

You might want to check out the ATI X800XT video card as it seems to be the best card available for a G5 MAC today. The NVIDIA 6800 can drive two 30″ Apple cinema displays but the X800XT is supposed to be faster in the pipelines business?

[chris newman] ” i don’t have the extended applecare but the computer is under 3 years old. should i contact ATI or apple to see if the card itself has a warranty? “

Naw! No Apple Care – you are on your own. Now is a great time to upgrade the video card anyhow.

You must get a video card that has MAC support listed on the packaging box. The ATI X800XT is the hottest card available and I believe it has two DVI ports. It has 256 MB DDR VRAM and is the hottest thing you can buy for the mac today. Check out the prices on http://www.buy.com as they are generally as good as you can find most snywhere reliable.

If you don’t want to spend the bux for the top dog then look up the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition. It is a little older and priced lower but still a good card.

BTW – If you are ever planning on running Motion, you can not use the ATI 9200 video card for that.

June 16, 2005 at 1:51 am in reply to: point blank ? about HDV & DVCPROHD

You can not bring HDV (MPEG-2) and DVCPROHD (compressed HD) into the same project timeline. Totally different formats and codecs. You can select either format in FCP 5, but not both at the same time.
