okay, so I’ve made some bizarre progress. Like I said before I downloaded the AppleHDV codec, but couldn’t get it into the QT folder…and I was/am still unable to play the clips in QT player, HOWEVER, i tried again to import them into Avid, and it worked to an extent: though it seemed to import all the clips just fine–no error msgs–I now have audio, but no video–the screen is black…. Oh, and I just opened a bin and hit “IMPORT”, that’s how.

just read that the codecs come WITH Media Composer, so I must already have them…

no, I haven’t tried that. The one I was given was: AppleHDVcodec.component. –?? I will check out the Avid codec pack…

Actually, I just need to get the raw material into Avid. It’s currently in QT form, but I can’t screen it or import it into Avid.

Is there an advantage to working off the internal hard drive? Would it make more sense to soup that up and not use an external? (except for having the backup RAID)

Can someone tell me how best to configure the iMac for editing. I understand that it should have the 3.4ghz processor. What about memory and hard drive? anything else a must-have?
I edit mostly verite doc-type shows, with some effects, but not effect heavy. Using an external drive. Might be doing a film with a lot of flat art and stills to be manipulated. I’d like to be equipped, but don’t want to spend a mint getting all the bells and whistles if I don’t need them.

Thank you, Richard, for the RAID advice. In terms of professional consultation, I’m going to have to cobble something together on my own. The filmmaker I’m working with has some sort of work flow in place, so I can use and add to that. And I have worked in FCP, for a couple of years a couple of years ago (or so), so I’m going to have to dust off my knowledge and add to it. I’m not sure what’s changed since then.
(you have made me nervous though!)
