Tony, not sure I understand completely, since I agree with your thoughts. I guess maybe I’m the only one that doesn’t see it as an either/or choice. BMD clearly borrowed from X… now I’d like to see Apple borrow from R11…

Bill, this could be a long discussion and this week I’ll be a bit pressed with the new Mac Pro arriving tomorrow and all the setup and transfer. In the meantime while others thrash this about, I’ll comment briefly.

The first obvious answer is asymmetric trimming. If you don’t use it I suppose it doesn’t count. I never really understood it’s value until I saw an Avid editor explain it to me. In some situations it’s damn handy.

I don’t think a myriad of keyboard shortcuts and ancillary windows are a replacement for a faster more intuitive method like R11. The way the tool can be changed to all trim options simply by mouse position. No keyboard commands required. The ability to choose which tracks (dirty word here I know) is also very useful. I suppose I should say choose which resources?

And of course the four up window is something to wish for in FCP X…

I’ll try to watch this thread while I’m doing the edit equivalent of a tax audit… transferring TB’s of files and installing all the programs from scratch… hope I’m not on suicide watch by the end of the week…

Actually no. My post was a compendium of comments regarding FCP X. Some people believe the database warrants living with any short-coming… others think the trimming is pathetic( heard that one behind me in the BMD booth and again from someone else at the SuperMeet.

Do I think the trimming is great? No. One look at R11 and you see what I believe is a far more intuitive approach. I’ll be interested in hearing other peoples comments once they use it…

Exactly my thoughts, but like you I use X. I do think R11 looks like the ultimate plugin for FCP X… assuming the back and forth is as seamless as BMD thinks…

I guess that depends on what you think an editing system is? If you think the database is the only thing that counts, then sure. If you think that the trimming functions in FCP X are pathetic, then you might feel otherwise. BMD’s first attempt shows real genius.

If you find yourself asking why it took Apple three years to come up with a barely functioning system for managing keyframes, while BMD accidentally did it better the first time than Apple has after three years, then you might feel different. I guess it all depends on what kind of work you do, If you’re all cuts and dissolves, none of this matters.

BTW, I thought the hybrid track thing was interesting. A single track that represents several tracks, yet can still have some track functionality was inspired. Sort of the best of both worlds. Felt very “Apple-esqe”… the old Apple anyway.

Apple’s had three years. Imagine what R14 will look like? Hey Apple, feel that warm breath on your neck? Channel Steve and do what you used to be capable of… and do something inspiring with FCP X…

Spoken like someone who hasn’t actually stood in front of it? It’s more than tracks. It’s a keyframe system that has you hoping Apple will steal it. The two guys behind me went “dammit” when they saw that. They both said why couldn’t Apple do that?

It’s a trimming system that feels more Apple than FCP X.

This is the first release. Lets see what it looks like in a year. Let’s face it, Apple hasn’t set the world on fire in the last three years in terms of progress either.

I honestly see R11 as filling in a lot of gaps in FCP X, I don’t see it replacing it. Having said that, maybe it’ll light a fire under Apple’s posterior and we’ll see some real progress and more filling in gaps? Pipe dream probably, but hey miracles can happen.

Or are we talking about multiple people starting with the same instance of a timeline pulled from an open (but locked to all except the owner) bin and doing their thing, as is done with Avid on an ISIS? I keep seeing Avid referred to as allowing multiple people on one timeline, and that is most certainly NOT the case.

The way it’s been explained is that you have a single editor. The editor is the focal point. From there you can have as many colorists as you want. You can also have multiple people ingesting clips at the same time. The editor is at the small end of the funnel.

As more footage is added, the editor can add it. As the colorists update the clips, they appear red on the editors timeline to indicate that they’ve been graded. It’s up to the editor to decide whether to accept the grade or not.
