June 27, 2006 at 7:07 pm in reply to: motion is a big pile of crap

I couldn’t help but read this entire thread and find myself with my jaw open in amazement at not only the initial post from Chris but his last one as well.

Chris, my question to you is this… How in the world could you possibly expect help and ask for it by with such a negative attitude? This forum, along with all the others, are here to help us troubleshoot and learn. Is there anything at all anyone could have said that would have changed your mind about Motion being crap? Sounds like you already have your mind made up about the program and just voicing your opinion of how Motion sucks because you cannot achieve an alpha channel. Does your project require Motion? Couldn’t you use one of them “many” other programs you know to achieve your goal and prevent you from posting such negative CRAP on this forum? We all have trouble and wierd things that only happen to us and no one else….

Remember.. it is all in the approach. When you come off arrogant and know it all, then people are less likely to help you and more likely to analyze you.

I will be surprised if anyone actually offers you a solution to your problem after your last post. Good luck on figuring it out.

    Tony,

Thank you for your reply. I understand what you are saying to be accurate… I am just at a loss as to why the settings need to be changed now and it wasn’t something we did before. Is there one intitial setup that will accomodate both so there is no need to change the setting?

    Thank you!

yes, same beta deck and nothing has been rerouted… still same setup since i started. i have been backtracking and trying to figure out what could be different and the only thing I have done recently was to make a vhs dub station from the beta deck, but i used an open connection… nothing undone to accomodate. I have a second beta deck for dubbing from beta to beta and i usually switch the main beta from component 1 to 2 then dub.

My boss is suggesting we start from ground zero and rewire everything and I just can’t see that as the easiest solution.

    Thank you!

look at your timecode… if it appears as 00:00:00:00 (with a colon before the last set of 00’s) then it is non drop frame and you will have no time code interruption. If it appears as 00:00:00;00 with a semi colon before the last set of 00’s then it is drop frame. FCP will not really drop frames, but alter the time. Two timeecode numbers are skipped from the frames counter each minute except for every tenth minute.

If you have the FCP 5 manuals, visit page 26 for more details.

I am not sure if this is the solution… hope it is!

    Jeremy…

I am definitley moving forward to finalize… the spots have already been dubbed and sent to the TV stations… same for the DVD… it is off for replication. I just find FCP is acting really strange and Apple says it isn’t FCP and AJA says it isnt the video card.

To answer your question… all media files are in the same place the Terabyte from the beginning. They are not showing offline in the bin and yes, they show rendered in full on the timeline and playback fine. Just trying to figure out where the hang up could be for the clips icon to constantly say media offline.

I appreciate everyone’s help and suggestions. I am moving forward… thank you!!!!

The clips have no effects on them at all… two are uncompressed 10 bit which is what my timeline is set for and two others are QT Lossless with Alpha cause they are my effects. It does not show it needs to be rendered… it has already been rendered on the timeline and nothing has been moved. When playing back, the blue unrendered slate DOES NOT appear… the clips play back fine cause they are rendered fully on the timeline. The problem is their icon at the beginning of the clip has the media offline icon and in the bin the media files are showing connected… there is no red line to show they are not connected. When I start the project it says 4 files are offline but when asked to relocate it does not list any clips… it is blank. So there is nothing to allow me to reconnect.

i emptied the trash and shut down FCP… deleted caches files again… emptied trash again then rebooted and same thing. arrrggghhh… does it sound like software problem?

Ok… trashing the cache didn’t fix the problem. Still showing offline media icon on the timeline but playing back fine. Also, when I launch the project it tells me I have 6 media files offline but where it should list the files is blank with one blue line… very wierd. I am not sure if I mentioned my set up but it is a G5 Quad with a 1.28 TB Drive, AJA IO and Betacam deck. I have already trashed the whole pref folder and now the cache files… is it possible FCP reads the cache from the trash can? I failed to empty the trash before I relaunched.

    Thank you 🙂
