  • Michael I appreciate your insights. If I import the project from it’s new location into an open AE project it still hangs in the same way because AE is still trying to mount the old xserve and link to the media it thinks is there. Once I quit AE the error I get in the finder says it can’t find the old server.

Open Sesame could be an option, but it seems like you need to be able to open a project in order to run it and my problem is that I cannot seem under any circumstance to open up an old comp without hanging AE.

For whatever reason this seems to be more of a mac issue. I had our 3D department open up the file on one our PCs and it behaved as expected where everything came up missing but it didn’t hang on opening. Thanks for the help and right now I’m out of the weeds for time being!

  • That’s what I would have expected to happen too – that AE would just not find the file and move on in just the way it normally does when it can’t locate a file in a given path. However, I think what’s happening here is that AE is trying to mount a server that doesnt exists in order to look for the media and that seems to totally lock it up. I get no error message in AE, but after AE hangs on the project open, I then get a message in the finder a few mins later that says “Xserve Volume Can’t Be Found” or something along those lines. It’s like it gets stuck just trying to see if it can mount the server volume.

Is there anyway to open an AE project and edit directory locations? Or any way to force that AE will just open with all media unlinked? I feel like those are my only two options here.

I’ve tried in AE 13.1.1.3 and AE 12.2.1.5

How are you making the speed change? Are you using the time stretch percentage in the timeline or doing it by adding the Timewarp filter to the clip directly?

If you’re time stretching the clip it should just automatically extend within your comp and you can enable optical flow by clicking twice under the frame blending icon.

If you’re using the Timewarp filter you have 2 options. Option 1. Pre-comp your clip and leave room in your comp after your clip to account for the slow-motion and then apply the Timewarp filter to the precomp. Option 2. Apply the Timewarp filter to the effect directly and set your speed. Then in the Interpret Footage window change number of loops to 2 and you will be able to extend the outpoint of the clip so that you’ll be able to see full clip length in slow motion.

    Good luck!

  • PPro and 10.9.3 for many people was an unworkable Software/OS combo. We kept everything on 10.9.2 for this reason but one of our machines was mistakenly upgraded to 10.9.3 and when that happened certain PPro projects would not play or export properly. 10.9.4 fixed those bugs and we upgraded mid-project. I agree you normally wouldn’t want to do this, but given all of the known issues I think it’s your best option to get off 10.9.3 immediately.

There’s an old tutorial that shows how to do this using card dance:

This sounds like the effect you’re looking for. Card Dance will be really handy to break your dancer footage apart into tons of tiny mosaics. Hope this helps!

Some years I used some virtual sets from these guys. We bought individual sets from them and they give you multiple angles and mattes. Not sure what your budget is, but I think they charge around $100/set.

  • This did change in more recent versions of knoll. You now have to activate the unmult setting for the plug-in. Open the “rendering” tab and then click the checkbox next to unmult. You should see the background drop away.

Randy – Definitely odd that the effect was showing on comps that didn’t even have frame blending turned on. I’m glad forcing it off in the Queue worked. Glad everything worked out!
