THe Project file may have gotten corrupted. Premiere by default saves another copy every five minutes (Auto Save) for a total of 5. They are located in an “Adobe Premiere Pro Auto-Save” folder inside your project folder. Try to open the newest one (not #5 necessarily).

Most Pc’s running Windows XP {non media center) cannot play mpeg 2 without 3rd party software. Mpeg 1 is a better choice.

For your short movie 7 mbps for video will work fine.

The only half decent QT codec is H264.

Are you talking about a Video DVD (VIDEO_TS folder) or just a DVD with a video clip burned to it? Why 1 GB?
On the right side of the Export Settings window, below the Summary are various tabs. Click the Video Tab and scroll down to see Target Bitrate.

You have complete control over the resulting file size. The default settings are just a starting point. Back off bitrate by 500 kbps and it will fit on a DVD.

Realtek AC97 on-board sound cards can be buggy with original drivers…updating drivers usually fixes.

No, not yet anyway. Vegas does. Some folks use an Elcard or Cineform product to change the format so it can be edited in Premiere. Editing highly compressed video will require a stout PC.
