Hi Ralph,
Thanks for the message. The blog has been fun to write, and I plan on keeping up with updates on it. I know the video production blog world is a saturated one, so even if nobody reads it, at least it’ll keep my mind active and thinking about video production.
NAB 2011 was a very fun week. I thoroughly enjoyed the PPW classes I took. I know that some of the PPW instructors read this forum, so I just wanted to pass along my thanks to them. I really hope to return in 2012!

Yeah, I saw that same schedule and thought the same thing. It’s really quite useless, since it focuses on the tracks and not the specific courses.
I found this to be much more helpful, and specific:

A quick and dirty way to deal with it would be to use Premiere to zoom in slightly, so the window frame is no longer shown.

That happens to me too (and many others), but it’s about 4-6 seconds of waiting time before I can use Premiere, not 1-2 minutes. Disabling my anti-virus software fixes the problem. 1-2 minutes seems like a long time, so maybe it’s something other than the virus software.

Rates right off the bat are always great. I also like it when freelancers have a public view Google calendar so I can quickly see if they’re even available when I need them. You don’t have to get specific with it, just blocks of time when you’re already booked.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the quick response! One last PPW registration question: does the student discounted PPW registration package have the same access to all the classes (and boot camp sessions) that the regular priced PPW package does? I just want to make sure that it includes access to all the PPW classes that are offered Sat through Wed, and not limited to only specific days.
By the way, I really enjoyed your talk a few weeks ago here in Boston. (well, technically in Waltham)

Hi Alex,
Sounds like you’re on the right track. That’s almost the same exact system I have (i7-930, 12GB RAM, but I have a junk video card) and I’m very happy with it. I ended up buying separate components and building my own system, after pricing out pre-made options, including HP workstations. The only upgrade I would make to my system is to get a CUDA equipped video card to use the Mercury Playback Engine.
For your media RAID, you might want to think about not using the motherboard’s RAID controller, and rather use an “external” RAID controller. I’ve also found my media RAID to be plenty large: it’s four 1TB drives in a RAID5 configuration, so that gives me just about 2.8TB of usable space. I backup projects on external drives, so I only have my current project on the media RAID. I mainly edit DVCPRO HD 720p60 and AVCHD 1080i60 footage, so this is plenty of space for me. Those editing higher res footage may need more space. Here’s a good RAID calculator:
https://www.ibeast.com/content/tools/RaidCalc/RaidCalc.aspI guess the big question is: what will your clients do with this system? What kind of footage do they typically edit, are you using After Effects heavily, etc.

Looks like MediaInfo is incorrect. I’ve had it get confused with interlaced footage before too. According to the Sanyo site, that camera captures 1080i60, which is 60 *fields* per second, resulting in 30 frames per second interlaced. “1920 x 1080 (60 fields/s 12Mbps)”

Are you sure that it’s 60 frames per second, and not 60 *fields* per second (which is actually 30 frames per second)?
What is the make and model number of the camera you used?
