thanks David. My pc fits within the minimal requirements. My GPU is a GTX 1080 8GB. I knew GPU was critical to running Resolve before I decided to try it.

I’m brand new to 4K video and braw. Are most people who run a pc with my specs editing their 4K footage or are they doing the proxy thing (something I’ve never tried)?

Mind if I ask what system you’re using? Are you editing 4k footage or proxies or just HD? I currently have a GTX 1080 (8gb) GPU and 16gb ram. Resolve freezes every 3 minutes when I try to edit 4k braw.

Do you have experience with working on large projects like two hr. features in Vegas? Is it stable?

January 18, 2018 at 1:00 am in reply to: Vegas pro vs Adobe Premiere

I’m currently debating myself though between Vegas and Dacinci Resolve. My first two micro budget features were edited with Vegas. The movie linked below was my first movie and first time editing anything and I choose Vegas after first trying Adobe. I thought Adobe was laughable with all the extra steps involved and an interface that just didn’t make sense to me. I love Vegas’ ease of use!

On a different note I had major issues with both movies getting them rendered out and delivered. MAJOR issues. The second movie I finally had to send the movie to the distribution company’s video guy and he then rendered the parts together. How embarrassing. However I should mention that I’m not real sharp when it comes to computers and some of my issues may have been due to an inadequate pc system. It’s interesting though that the video guy previously mentioned told me he has more delivery issues with Vegas users than anyone else.

I have recently upgraded my pc but have not had the chance to do any rendering tests in Vegas. I still own the older Vegas 10. I’ve also been playing a little with davinci resolve which has the appearance of being “more professional” though I’m still on the fence.

thanks for the info fellows. I also learned from a Panasonic guy that the life expectancy for a Pany screen is 20K hrs so I don’t feel like my monitor is that “used” now. Just fyi. Thanks again for the tips!

November 2, 2016 at 2:21 am in reply to: Which hmi light?

I post a question about hmi’s and all anyone wants to talk about is LED’s. lol. That’s revealing though and has me looking more into LED’s. I actually bought several Dracast 1×1 panels a few weeks ago and like them a lot.

I come from a still photography background where lighting is much less…complicated. I’m really diving into video and want to build up a small lighting kit which is why I was asking about the HMI’s. So since we’re talking…my much bigger question really is what do you guys recommend for a basic lighting kit for shooting small feature films? I realize every situation is different but can you suggest any certain “must haves”? I’ve already picked up the forementioned LED’s. I plan to get a collection of flags, nets, scrims, silks, reflectors, ect… I “was” looking at the cheap Chinese HMI’s before you all dissuaded me. I’m also looking at building a collection of Mole Richardson fresnels. My budget for this gear is about 5-6K so that rules out buying too many more LED’s lights or high end lights like the Jokers.

Renting is not a good option for me for numerous reasons but mainly because I want to own the lights so that I can play around with them all the time. That’s the only way I’ll really learn the tools. What else should I be looking into?

I greatly appreciate the replies and am researching the lights mentioned! I’d love to comment with more questions/thoughts when I get a minute, hopefully tomorrow. It’s great that there are forums like this where a guy can pick the brains of others.

It may be that people associate Vegas with “amateur” regardless of whether you are or not. Or it may be that they have had previous bad experiences with Vegas and refuse to deal with the issues that may arise due to the software. I use Vegas for professional use though am switching due to the second reason. The problems I have exporting large projects is epic. It’s embarrassing for me when I have to tell the distribution company’s video department that I’ll be sending them my movie in parts and they’ll have to render it together themselves because I can’t do it myself.
