[Tom Nelson] “Also, you might be wise to bring some large ND or scrim to knock down the amount of light coming through the windows, if possible, so you might have the option to tone down your light on the talent. Be prepared.”

This won’t be techincally feasable as the lobby we are shooting in has floor to ceiling windows on both sides of the wall, aprox 40′ height with a at least 60′ combine width. We will be shooting on the 3 floor of the lobby off a balcony like section.

I couldn’t even stab a guess at what the cost of that much ND would be let alone how in the world i would rig it up. maybe it really isn’t that hard i don’t know.

But i have use ND on windows when shooting in smaller rooms with windows.

You are correct about the lack of generators so yes we will be forced to use 20amp circuts. Thank you for advice I will look into these lights.

You say I don’t need a background light, which I agree with, but do you also mean I don’t need a Backlight on the talent? If I do any thoughts on that?

  • The jvc is a good camera. It might be a good entry point Depending on your distance the standard lens might not give you the super tight shot you would want foe football, but you do have have the ability to expand later.

We have both a tricaster and a blackmagic atem switcher here at our university. Our students have used them both for creating they’re newscasts. My opinion I prefer the tricaster. I can’t quite nait it down but for me the atem is a bit more finicky. The set up and configuing of the Tricaster is a quick and easy. Are you planing on getting a control surface for either? We installed the touchscreen version of the atem and i’ll tell you its not as responsive as I would want it to be, plus there is just somthing to pressing a physical button.

    my two cents

Short answer will it work, theoretically yes.

long answer. Never buy gear for the sake of buying gear if your not sure what to get and use find a rental house, or a friend, or a friend of a friend and rent the stuff and test it out to see if it will work before sinking money into it. you may find work a better workflow. To you it seems like 4000 is a lot of money but I can tell you that is a pittance compared to high end work. if your worried about getting the right gear you need to invest in some R an D and find out nothing is worse then blowing your investment on useless grew that won’t give you want you want.

hope that helps Learn from my failures 🙂

  • All of the machines are Mac, Working in a NAS storage eviorment.

What I find intersting is that the icons change from being a AMA with the little chain link icon to a regular clip icon when I move Machines.

  • [Shane Ross] “The MXF files have issues in the Avid? Hmmm…wonder why”

Yes this has been plagueing me for a few weeks now i get weird AMA plug in errors when I link, or I get Segment Fault Errors when I try and import.

  • [Shane Ross] “Let me guess….recorders that record directly to ProRes”

Actually we are A XDCam house here so we have been using Nano Flashs for the last 2 years, it records to MXF or MOV. we also have a Omneon Spectrum with 6 channels of record that does XDcam MOV or MXF as well. But i have found that MXFs created by both of these have more issues when tring to import the we i use the MOV versions.

[Shane Ross] “The issue you are having is trying to make Avid work in the FCP workflow you established. That won’t be smooth, as it was designed around FCP.”

You are right but when your 12 million dollar broadcast plant which was completed a year ago was designed around FCP I don’t have much room to try and do anything else 🙂 This is why we are in the beta phases of seeing what we can still use and what do we need to change.

  • I understand what you are saying.

One thing for us is, its hard coming from a FCP workflow where we had the files immeditly accessible to edit as fast as we could pull the MOVs off the external recorder. Now going from our establised workflow to braving a new world its just a difficult process. During our certification training a couple of weeks ago our trainer keep saying “you have to learn to think like a Avid” and as much I didn’t want to I know I must.
