    Ideally yes. In Fcp 7 all you needed to do was drag a sequence into a video track. And it would act as a clip, but then you can double click and just load up that Timeline make changes and then go back to you other sequence.

    Check your Console for details. Sometimes Avid thinks a clip has a different frame rate then it does and so it thinks it can’t consolidate the clip. I find this happens at times with footage that comes from a Sound Devices recorder, but I haven’t tests the ninjas (Atmos right?) so i’m not 100% sure that’s the case. if this is the case it should say something to the effect can’t consolidate mixed rate footage, in the console. and if it does then you will need to transcode and not consolidate.

    When you consolidate and select keep master linked then your new consolidated clips should appear in the same bin as your AMA clips but with a .New added to the name. if you select the opposite of keep master linked ( I can’t remember exactly what its called) then your new consolidated clips will retain the file name and the AMA clips with have a .Old added to the end of the name.

    Either way you will have two clips in the bin one that is still a AMA clip (which will have the AMA Icon and a new clip that will not have the AMA Icon)

    Not necessarily when you transcode you are telling avid that this is all new media and it loses all relationship data keeping the AMA clip and a consolidated clip. so you can’t do things like batch import and so forth.(not the end of the world) Also when you are consolidated you are just moving a copy of the file and re wrapping the file extension to a MXF OP-Atom in to the avid media files structure. So the time it takes is just about the same amount as it would to copy and paste a file. Where is transcoding is making a complete new file so it will take longer granted not a ton longer (depending you system specs and what not).

    Playing with it here I’m really digging what I’m seeing. Like what others have said Background processing is great and it will really speed up our workflows. we don’t have the pleasure of having assistant editors as they are all students here, but this workflow will be great. they can start cutting with the AMA files and when the transcoded or consolidates are finished they can just relink and keep working.

    Not sure if this was in earlier version but i like that you can AMA just about anything video audio graphics its great. and if you AMA in a clip that supports alpha channel the clip comes in as a matte key. preserving the alpha.

  • Also, Can I save the Clips Bin and my Sequences Bin (before I start to put Media in it) on another Drive and Paste it in another project so I don’t have to keep making these Bins everytime I start a new project.

    Yes you can. You can even put these bins with in folders, And when you copy and paste them into new projects the folders will also be seen in your avid “project”

    Just to be aware in MC7 you can AMA link in music and graphics including PSD files. I just did it to confirm.

    The graphics come in as linked matte keys, but if the image isn’t formatted to your project resolution then it does deform the image.

    but it is pretty cool new feature. hopefully this doesn’t confuse the OP as what Shane has explained is really the “right” way of doing things.

    We work with F3 footage all the time in conjunction with avid and resolve and effects such as stabilize or BCC stuff. there is just one added step to what I outlined. after you have brought in the AAF to Avid all of the graded clips are loaded into the same bin. You highlight all of the new master clips select modify and then select source. There you can change the tape name of the clips. since the new clips come from resolve they don’t have a tape name so you can give it any name you want. Then with your original imported F3 ungraded clips select and modify there tape name to match exactly what you named your graded clips. Now you can highlight your finished sequence that has all the effects, stabilize, etc. and do a relink. now your sequence has all of your effects and graded footage.

    so to get the footage from the production house have them do a consolidate ( which is like media manager of FCP) of there project to the hard drive they are sending you and then you will have the Avid project and the correct Avid Media files folder structure.

    then you can open it up and export the AAF.

    seems complicated but it really does work

    We do a Avid to Resolve AAF round trip weekly here. With Resolve version 8 it was a bit of a hassle but worked, now with 9 we have almost no issues with the round trip.

    Are you grading in-house or is the show sending you the media?

    if your all in-house and can access the same Avid Media Files (Via a central storage or portable hard drive) you should have little to no problems.

    Have the Avid Editor import the f3 footage to a Online format such as DNXHD 145 or Apple Pro Res 422, relink to the final sequence Export a AAF from avid. In conform of resolve import the AAF and when prompted to find the files point to the Avid Media Files folder on the hard drive or central storage. Resolve will import clips just like with a FCP XML. Grade away.

    For export you have two options depending on if you are finishing in resolve or needing to go back to Avid. if finishing in resolve just export a finished flat file. if you need to round trip back to avid. in deliver select the easy setup for avid found trip. and then point you render location to the Avid Media files but make a new numbered folder (2) render and then go back to the conform page and export a AAF.

    The avid editor can now import the AAF and get a sequcnec similar to how FCP7 XML creates a new sequence with the graded clips.

    External recording is a viable option but to make sure you don’t have camera op error. You would need to run video cable from camera back to your center location so only one person hits record which is added cost for cabel. There are lots of companies that make reasonable priced external recorders but a lot depends on connection type from your camera (sdi, hdmi, component, etc) and what dormant you want to record to.

    Give me a little more info on your setup.
