That’s what I thougt but when I did I got the same error in resolve. Maybe I did it wrong. Just to be sure what I did what right clicked on my sequence and chose consolidate/transcode. There I click on transcode set where to create the media (a separate media drive) selected dnxhd 135 and selected ok. When the transcode was completed I selected the new sequence and exported the aaf.

When I import it in resolve I get the error Time extended don’t match.

Again I ask how much of a delay are you getting, (ballpark?)

Like Jim said the EX3 and the Black Magic are probably only introducing a couple of frames MAX of delay. I think you are going to spend more money switching out your cameras and Switcher then you would finding out which piece in your infrastructure is add the most delay and finding a replacement for that. I could be wrong, but i’m of the philosophy of trouble shooting to the point you know what excatly is happing instead of blindly trying to throw money at a probelm when your not sure thats the culprate.

The more info you give us the more we can help you.

How much of a delay are you talking?

I have used ex3 on many occasions pertty sure that isn’t your problem. I haven’t used the blackmagic switcher but you say it doesn’t have a dely when sending the signal one way, but that their is a delay when sending it through converters, my guess would be the converters or the LCD itself.

We run a large 15,000 seat performace space and there is a small delay with our video projectors but it is slight enough that its mostly un noticeable the only thing we have to do is delay the audio a few milliseconds to conpensate.

I might suggest looking at the Newtek Tricaster if your budget is 20k you can easily affort the Tricaster 300 (around 11k). whats great about this little guy is it can provide you a all in one Virtual set desginer and switcher. not to mention a CG and VTR playback. with your extra cash you can purchase come of their Virtual set backgrounds, which i would say are pretty high quality.

Im guessing your issue with the delay is in the Mac book and not the Firewire, I have use firewire countless times without nocticable dely. The biggest problem you face is trying to make the Mac work as a video switcher. I know you don’t have budget but have you tried begging any of your local TV stations for old Gear? it may be out of date but in many cases you might be better off. and heck depending on the area you live in maybe they do have a old Standard Def Switcher sitting in their suplus pile and they would being willing to donate it to your schools as a charitble contribution.

February 12, 2012 at 5:51 pm in reply to: Dealing with picky bid specs

I have been in the opposite position many times before (being the one to hire work). And for me I’m sometimes bound to play within the rules I’m given. Think of it this way. If I was a private company I could choose who I want to work for me. I have a group that I do like to use, why because I have a realationship with them. I know then product, In a nut shell I know what the end product will be. Like a director who only works with such and such a AD or DP or only this editor. Not because others can’t do the job but becauase they are the ones they are comfortable working with. They don’t have it out for the other guys. But In Government work especially you can’t work like this. Everything is bid on. Everything!!! And usually you don’t get to make the choice some else does. So you are forced to find loopholes and work arounds to get what you want. Unfortunately groups like yours get burned In The process. Again they don’t mean too they just want to work with they guy they want. So they make up assorts of reasons why. The satellite uplink seems like a dead giveaway. I have on many occasions said ” well these are the only guys who work with x, and so we need them”. Did I really need x to get the job done, heck no but it help when the selection committee went to chose.

My two cents. Sorry you got burned though

Gaffe Tape! I always need it and i always forget it!!!.

The thought comes to mind that this is subjective to what type of work are you doing? News, documentary, promos? Al joked and said a van, but i would agree depending on the type of shoot i’m doing my kits contain Lights, Stands, Reflectors, flags, cloth back drop, field/client Monitor, tons of stingers, and of course Gaffe Tape!!! To get it all to be with me all the time a van fits the bill nicely
