Thanks for the reply, Edward. I seem to have fixed the problem (though I am not quite sure how!). I suspect it might have been a layer order issue. If it comes back, I’ll send you the project.

One other question; I see that when using 3D reflector, falloff doesn’t work on 3D models imported via 3D Invigorator etc. Is there any kind of workaround you know of that can fake some kind of falloff?

    OK, now this is weird!

I took your advice and tried to render as animation via Media Encoder (2-pass variable) and I kept on getting an ‘encoding failed’ message when choosing my local hard drive for the location to save the file. However, if I choose the exact same settings but render to an external device such as a USB drive, the operation performs flawlessly AND the colours are spot on!

So, I’ve finally got a solution (many thanks) but this has caused another head scratching session as I can’t understand why I can’t use my hard drive as a target device for the exported file?!

    Thanks for the reply, Ted.

To answer your question, in QT the colours look washed out, probably the most washed out of all the players I tried so far. In VLC, they are *slightly* better, but still washed out. Windows Media Player shows the video almost exactly how it looks within AE.

What I can’t figure out is why, if I export as lossless AVI, the footage looks fine regardless of which media player I use!

Just an update: I wasn’t able to figure out what was causing the problem, so I deleted the Reflector effect and reapplied it and it now works fine. I must have corrupted the Reflector comp somehow.

  • That’s brilliant, Brent! Thank you for the info. 🙂

  • Thanks for the reply, Edward.

To answer your question yes, I was using the updater script to update the comp, but that didn’t seem to be working.

Now I think I’ve identified what my problem is. In the comp I described above I had my AE camera parented to a null object (makes it easier to control the camera, especially with orbits as you will know). I think for some reason, 3D reflector doesn’t like the camera being parented because if I remove the null object/parenting, and animate the camera directly, then the reflections DO work properly, but the moment I parent the camera to a null, then the reflections stop updating.
