  • I just finished a 40GbE end to end fiber storage system half SSD half spinning Very nice scales up really well and plays anything you can throw at it.

  • I’m in LA now. Had to come out to universal studios to build up some post facilities but I manage both coasts now. When ever want to come to the lot the doors open.

  • I too think remote is a cool workflow. But this is for a series which requires a lot of screening with producers, meetings, on set editing….. blah blah blah.

So we do need some folks in house for this one. We are exploring remote but typically we don’t love the idea of putting all our raw content online. We will get there I’m sure. Networks move a little slower sometimes with these things.

  • And to be clear this is a job for NBCUniversal directly. The position will be out of 30Rock in NYC which is why I am looking for NYC folks only. I just threw the posting up on my page so I could get it out there faster and start bringing people in.

  • Not looking for a teacher. Just want someone that really knows it so we can minimize their training time and get them to editing as quickly as possible. Was just so excited about it I went for more colorful language.

Sorry I’m late to the party.

I just finished a estimated $1 Million upgrade to my facility for 4K production using FCPX and the Blackmagic 4K Cameras. We dropped in about 1PB of SAN storage as well as a MAM from Levels Beyond ( REACH ). Like others have said in FCPX 4K work is really easy. And if you enable proxies your just working with HD footage which we all have done for years. Or delivery format is Broadcast but we are mastering everything in 4K for future distribution. While it’s a bit overkill what we did and if you’re interested in it Part 1 of a 3 Part series is up here ( https://www.loudyeti.com/archives/567 ) The reality if you want to be in 4k all you need is a macbook pro with a Pegasus Raid and A BM4KPC, decent lens and some SSD’s

    So $2000 for the computer $1500 for the storage – $3000 for the camera – $900 for SSD’s – $1300 for a set of cinema lenses = $8700 total

This is all we used to test out the workflows and make our decisions to move towards it.

And if your looking to trick out your cameras we use ViewFactor.net for cages and support gear. AMAZING quality, priced great and great people to work with.

Entry to 4K is insanely inexpensive cheeper than most current HD rigs. And if you’re using FCPX its really easy too. If you’re on the fence go 4K and that money you spend today will last you years to come.

    Sure.

So on my two primary edit rigs I have three hard drives.

    (1) Macintosh HD + (2) A Internal Media Drive + (3) External Storage ( 42TB San on Tower, SATA drive on Laptop )

    (1) I don’t usually put any events or projects on the drive as I like those to be SSD’s so there isn’t much room but you can.

    (2) Has all my events

    (3) Has all my media

    —-

When we started cutting in X we were adding San locations and just cutting where we stored stuff.

Performance was super slow, It took about 10 minutes for the program to load from that first start up. and then scrubbing and playback was jumpy and this all got worse the more footage we added to the project. On average our show produces about 20-25 hours of footage per episode.

But when I went home and cut on the laptop with the media external from the events ( due to space limitations on a laptop ) the exact same project booted in 8 seconds.

Once we did the same on the SAN we had huge performance boots everything was just snappier projects loaded in a fraction of the time, and it allowed us to share media much easier as with an added San location only one user can be accessing it at any given time.
