I spoke with M100 today – they told me that Media 100 HD will have a software only version (sw?) for $1000, which is their answer to FCP HD.
It will have DV capture for both DV and HDV, and be compatible with existing M100i or 844 projects and media. The demo sw version on their website does everything except capture – clearly just for marketing purposes.Well if I need a new editing system, if my M100i ever goes, I will have to decide if I want M100 HD sw or FCP 5 – the FCP bundle seems like a great deal – either way the new G5 is my biggest expense – when the time comes that is. That being said, M100 HD looks pretty nice.

So you are actually doing this job already?
What about client review and revisions?
Is there no producer for the shoots?
I’d charge $10,000 per episode.
Do you have your own editing rig? Factor in paying for that.
Based upon all the work you are talking about doing (making a bag of shiny apples out of week old applesauce), how are your results?Do tell.

years ago either coke or pepsi used Right Now from Van Halen very effectively in a SuperBowl commercial. A client of the studio where I was interning wanted to do a similar treatment on the opening video for their conference.
They paid like $30,000 to license that song for that one-off purpose. Granted it was ABB or some mega corporation so they had the capital.
But unless it is a school project or a family video, I would stay away from other peoples’ music.
Remember reality shows are very popular and thus have budgets for music clearances.
Most tv networks have BMI or ASCAP licenses, which covers their use of music during some shows (is this still the case?)There is a tall tale about Disney suing some kid’s parents for using a Little Mermaid song in a ballet recital.

Once while editing a long-form video,
I needed an effect from my long dead ADO.
So I rendered my file from my Media 100i,
And transferred it to my ftp site on high.
Downloading to my PC was a snap,
And Adobe Premiere rotated my clip…just like that.
Just to be different, I burned a CD,
Of my new Quicktime file easy as can be.
I loaded the new movie back into my Mac,
And rendered it out on the video track.
The client was happy, her worries were gone,
And she never even asked me what machine I did it on.
So to quote Pixel Monkey, as my co-worker smirks,
Who cares how you do it, s’long az it werks! Thanks for the inspiration. I think we may have an LP on our hands.
Should we post this thread in an audio forum? 🙂Mike Cohen

June 22, 2005 at 9:30 pm in reply to: Work fatigue, loss of concentration, etc. How to tackle them?Drink 1-2 liters of water per 8 hour day – keeps the blood flowing – avoid coffee unless you fall asleep more than 3 times while logging tape
exercise 3 times a week at least
sleep in once in a while
develop a language system with your significant other, such as 1-hour = 3 hours, etc
I like lots of light in my office – incandescent, not fluorescent
occasionally do something fun related to your job – such as making an animation or goofy video – try something you could never do in an actual project
drink lots of water – oh I said that already – but do it – may even help you lose weight if that is an issue
also avoid sugary snacks
take a multivitamin and get lots of protein
visit the creative cow site at least once a day
go for a walk after you eat your lunch – even in the rain or snow – you’ll dry off
Those are things I do – listen to your body.

June 22, 2005 at 1:23 pm in reply to: Anyone talking about the MTV Movie Awards production….there was a thread elsewhere on the COW about the awards – some speculation that they did the Mariah Carey thing in post – remember the show is taped ahead of time.
I always enjoy the movie spoofs, especially the Star Wars ones.

Interesting point Charlie – it seems the migration of Flash-type effects to TV is moving toward the retro. I never should have thrown away my ADO.
Remember the graphics they used to do with all the ghosting/trailing. Before the Peanuts specials they had this spinning “Special” logo, very vector looking.
Perhaps some clever designer will bring ASCI animation to television.
And remember the original Atari vector video games (tank, star wars, asteroids) – I’d better dust off my Commodore 64, we might be needing it. -
yes I have just finished a project with some flat 2d animation over a slightly moving background. Nothing too fancy but much nicer than a static graphic which is what was provided.
At least we have finally phased out gratuitous morphing!Mike

Interesting dilemma. It seems we are within a year or so of a low cost HDV camera for consumers, but consumers will not want to play DV sized tapes on their home theater systems – seems like sony and jvc have put the cart before the horse here.
Procoder – good solution.

Yes, if you speed it up to super fast speed, it gives the impression of time lapse – depends upon the length of time you showing – a sunset vs. the construction of a home – as posted by jokemaster – – you will either speed up the whole of the footage, or manually select the shots you want – if you want a long sequence from a lot of raw video and you are manually selecting frames – prepare for sheer boredom.
A few years ago as a gag I taped me and my wife setting up our campsite from a locked down camera – then found a piece of music, and made the raw video match the length of the track – it was pretty funny. Cut in a few inserts such as a closeup of hammering in a tent stake, cooking bacon on the camp stove and eating my breakfast, which made it even more of a hoot – did this in M100i 7.5 incidentally – occasionally find the time to have fun.
