The next popular design motif…?
Posted by Mike Cohen on June 19, 2005 at 9:24 pmOver the years commercials and show opens have made a habit of copying one another. I do it myself all the time.
The cuurent trend of freezing the action and silouhetting or otherwise isolating an element such as a person, is getting to the point of saturation.
The i-pod technique will no doubt grow in popularity in the coming years.
Anyone seen something new and innovative which may become pervasive soon?
As we are all as a group looking for new ways to get our message across, I thought this might be an interesting thread.

June 19, 2005 at 10:06 pmReels I’m seeing look more and more interchangeable. Everything has caught on and been done to death.
Cute plastic toys on student reels are getting old. It will be good to see another fad come in.
As far as day to day work, all clients want their 2-d in 3d space. I haven’t done a flat 2d animation in quite a while. -

June 20, 2005 at 6:07 pmyes I have just finished a project with some flat 2d animation over a slightly moving background. Nothing too fancy but much nicer than a static graphic which is what was provided.
At least we have finally phased out gratuitous morphing!Mike

June 21, 2005 at 1:47 amI’m still seriously in the learning mode, so please don’t consider me an expert…
Creative Planet has a site called Design in Motion that once seemed to have all the “leading indicators” for commercials, opens, bumpers, etc. Lots of QuickTime samples, etc.
Maybe I’ve gotten jaded, but lately that site has turned into a ‘press relase’ site with plenty of banner ads and almost no real examples of anything I can learn from. Some of the freshest stuff I’ve seen lately has been on IFC channel or on Sundance.
You might also do a search here for “inspiration.”

June 21, 2005 at 2:07 amOne good place for inspiration is the Reels and Portfolios category at
https://www.mograph.net/board/
Some people find that the chat forums at that site veer toward collegiate and
stick to the reels. -

Jim, I’ve been in the Television production business for over 43 years, and I am still learning. Never, ever, ever, quit learning. When you do, it’s time to get out.

June 22, 2005 at 3:53 amWe’re due for a return to retro. I expect to see a lot of low-res and limited palette animations like we saw in the early days of video games.

June 22, 2005 at 1:21 pmInteresting point Charlie – it seems the migration of Flash-type effects to TV is moving toward the retro. I never should have thrown away my ADO.
Remember the graphics they used to do with all the ghosting/trailing. Before the Peanuts specials they had this spinning “Special” logo, very vector looking.
Perhaps some clever designer will bring ASCI animation to television.
And remember the original Atari vector video games (tank, star wars, asteroids) – I’d better dust off my Commodore 64, we might be needing it. -
