I work in a small office with two other employees within a close proximity. Can’t really have external audio going. Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll check that out.

I figured it out, or at least I figured out how to get it to work. In the “AMA Settings – Bins” dialog, it was on “Create a new bin”. I unchecked it and checked “Use active bin”. Worked like a charm. Not totally sure of the reason but I suspect it was constantly putting my files into a new bin that it wasn’t connecting to.
I did discover, though, that I can’t make a QT reference movie from AMA material. But that’s a topic for another post…

That is correct, I’m connecting via Firewire 800. I’m still not totally knowledgeable on AVID’s file structure but video tutorials are helping and I think I’ve done it correctly.

A follow up to this. When I quit the project and reboot it, even the transcoded media goes offline. Now there’s no media.
I’ve used the Media Creation Tool at the start of the project to specify which drive I want the media to go to and it does create an Avid Mediafiles folder and places into it the three clips from the transcode. But now it’s offline.
I’ve also tried several different ways to get AMA to import the ProRes KiPro file, including taking the file in FCP and exporting out as a Quicktime with the AVID DV codec. It still brings the file in, but without turning it yellow and with a “Media Offline” indicator.

I appreciate that. It did dawn on me today that, like you said, I could compress in the background while editing my next timeline. That makes up for the extra time Premiere takes to compress an FLV compared to my third party program which is lightning fast.
I’ve also been with FCP for almost as long as you, but I’m having to seriously consider the migration. This particular problem is very disturbing. Render files are vanishing from the Render Files folder. As you know, missing render files makes a reference movie worthless. I’m into my second week trying to troubleshoot this and the Apple store says nothing is wrong with the computer. A third week is not an option. Not to mention, Apple is not exactly making FCP 7 a priority anymore.
Thanks again for your words of wisdom.

We wanted to isolate whether the problem was OS related or FCP related. By process of elimination we’re thinking OS since the same problem has occurred with the base FCP 7 that was happening with the most updated version.
By the way, I didn’t start having problems with 7 UNTIL I updated it. The very first update starting giving me big problems. But I edited without a hitch for about three months on the base version.

Incidentally, I’m working off of a 6TB RAID 0 array, but it’s not the culprit either. It happens on whatever drive I assign the scratch drives to, including the system drive.

If you already have FCP on your computer you could also consider lynda.com. All the FCP training you could want, online and a lot cheaper (about $37.50 per month for Premium membership, cancel anytime). Plus, you can go at your own pace and re-watch any lesson as many times as you need to.

Yeah, I’ve been with it since v. 2 and I thought I’d seen it all. Didn’t realize my company has Apple Care. I’ll see what they say.
Thanks.

I’m afraid it may have to come one of those solutions. With 65 timelines in the current project I’m on and hundreds more waiting in the wings on many other projects the thought of that is, shall I say, daunting.
