Premiere Exports
Posted by Mike Bugera on October 5, 2011 at 5:08 pmWe’re considering a switch to Premiere from Final Cut 7 because of a problem that doesn’t seem to be fixable.
One thing I need to know (for now) is, can Premiere export reference movies? Our workflow has us making reference movies of each of our timelines (each project averages 65 timelines at about 8 minutes each) and putting them into a third party program for compression. Making a full movie of each is not an option.
Thank you, Mike

October 5, 2011 at 10:57 pmMike,
I don’t think it can. I hope I’m wrong on this, but I’ve been migrating some of my projects to Premiere over the past few months, and haven’t seen any indication of a QT ref movie option (in the app or in forums). This is definitely something I miss from FCP. In fact, I still sync my DSLR footage in FCP, because I can save reference files, then compress master ProRes files and Timecode-window dubs, etc.
That said, PPro has the option of compressing a specific timeline using Adobe Media Encoder. In FCP (as you surely are aware), exporting to Compressor ties up FCP for the duration of the compression process. In contrast, Adobe Media Encoder will run in the background, so you can keep working. And AME is 64-bit, and is waaaaaaaay faster than Compressor.
This means that you can “export” a movie from PPro using AME, and continue working in PPro while that is happening. I know that isn’t what you were hoping for (I suspect someone has requested QT ref movies on adobe’s requests page, but it’s worth doing again — adobe is listening very carefully right now), but I also wanted to offer some alternatives that might be worth looking into.
Avid, by the way, does do reference movies, bless their hearts! But the speed and versatility of PPro has been pretty intriguing to me (been editing in FCP for 10 years before this).

October 6, 2011 at 5:21 pmI appreciate that. It did dawn on me today that, like you said, I could compress in the background while editing my next timeline. That makes up for the extra time Premiere takes to compress an FLV compared to my third party program which is lightning fast.
I’ve also been with FCP for almost as long as you, but I’m having to seriously consider the migration. This particular problem is very disturbing. Render files are vanishing from the Render Files folder. As you know, missing render files makes a reference movie worthless. I’m into my second week trying to troubleshoot this and the Apple store says nothing is wrong with the computer. A third week is not an option. Not to mention, Apple is not exactly making FCP 7 a priority anymore.
Thanks again for your words of wisdom.

October 6, 2011 at 7:15 pmI tell people that a QT reference movie has a shelf life of about one day. So if you’re going to move it into a self-contained QT immediately, then use it. Otherwise, create a contained file.
Of course that isn’t actually true, but if you treat it that way, then you’re not going to end up with those terrible errors that happen when files start disappearing.
