I thought I found a workaround by checking the width of each layer instead of if they are empty or not. I’m a bit surprised that this didn’t do the trick. 🙁

t1 = thisComp.layer("Heading 1 Line 1").sourceRectAtTime().width;
t2 = thisComp.layer("Heading 1 Line 2").sourceRectAtTime().width;

The legacy titling tool could be a workaround. However, since my task is to create easy-to-use templates for others to use, I think an Essential Graphics template built in AE is a better choice.

It just would be great to be able to build it in Premiere, since I sometimes experience AE templates to require (more) render time.

Thanks! That solves the out of range issue. But now I see that sourceRectAtTime() is not only a property of text layers. Is there a way to determine if a layer is a text layer?

You are right, it will be zero at som point in time of the comp. I did not know that Expressions would react on that. Thanks Dan, now I probably will find a way to work around the problem.
