Not exactly what you’re asking for, but there is a very handy script called Rift that lets you easily shift keyframes, layer inpoints, etc. https://aescripts.com/rift/
Premiere Pro has a feature called responsive design time that sounds a bit similar. If you look into it and it sounds like it might be what you want, I believe there’s a feature request to add it to AE at the Adobe After Effects uservoice you can upvote. ☺

September 4, 2018 at 6:32 pm in reply to: reverse screen replacement – tracking corners of a monitor and skewing to fixed frameThe solutions to your tracking issues can be varied. Tracking is rarely a fully automatic process. Sometimes tweaking the color, exposure, contrast, etc. pre-tracking can help. Sometimes messing with the advanced tracking options can help. Sometimes you’ll have to manually place the track points yourself on some frames.

If you’re just trying to drop rectangles, there are a number of ways to do it. Any of several particle effects would do it pretty easily.

I don’t see the Vegas effect; I see the stroke effect.
Are you trying to put the stroke around the green thing or around the arrows AND the green thing?– The Great Szalam

August 23, 2018 at 9:09 pm in reply to: Different ways to arrange layers when using animation and filmed footage? If the table is a solid color of any kind that’s different enough from your hands, it might be able to be keyed. Green or blue are the best since they don’t contain any red (digital video uses red, blue, and green in various amounts blended together to create all of the colors and most human skin is mostly red-dominant).
That said, if the table is pure white, you might be able to pull a luminance key, but that’s…tough.
Reminder, you don’t need some special “green screen” technology. Just get a very saturated (in color, not in wetness ????) green cloth, make sure there are NO wrinkles, and light it evenly.
The only way to cut something out besides chroma keying, luminance keying, or masks, is something called a difference key, but for that to work well, you need a fairly high end camera and really nice lighting. So, if there’s no budget for a green cloth, your camera probably isn’t going to capture a high enough amount of color to make it effective.

Yes. The Vegas effect (even though it doesn’t look right when you first apply it) is the way to go. Set it to work on the alpha channel and composite behind the original, make there not be any repetitions, and remove all the transparency options along the length of the stroke.
However, if you did it using a Track Matte, you would have to precompose it and then apply the Vegas effect. If you did it with the Set Matte effect or the Calculations effect (or some other channel effect), you won’t need to do the precomp thing first.

And the general link for the AE user guide is here: https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/user-guide.html
Although, something I didn’t mention 8 years ago when this thread originated, you could also just trim your shot in Premiere. ☺

August 23, 2018 at 5:40 pm in reply to: Want to stop-motion animate, do I have a good cam/software setup? Advice?Do you want to do stop-motion animation (as it says in your title) or time-lapse? Those are two, very different things.
If you’re doing stop-motion animation, you can do it with any camera (including the ones you have). As long as you can put the camera on a solid surface or tripod and you can lock the exposure settings, you’re good!

[Omar Wanis] “How’s AE multithreaded? Everywhere i see people talk on it being single threaded software.”
That’s why I spoke up. There’s a lot of misinformation flying around and, while Andrew is aware of the differences, a lot of other people aren’t. So, for the sake of future forum viewers, I had to say something.
[Omar Wanis] “Is it multithreaded in one task like rendering or previewing? Or doing multiple tasks at the same time?”
It is multithreaded in everything it does inasmuch as the renderer and UI are on different threads. So…it’s always in multiple threads. While rendering and previewing, it is also multithreaded. Some effects are more multithreaded than others. For an example I mentioned earlier, if you compare the rendering of the grain effects in earlier versions to the latest update, there can be a 5x difference in the speed (again, depending on your hardware) because they made the multithreading a lot better. Some tasks, as has been pointed out, are still single-threaded. So…it’s not a straightforward answer.
Software like this is complicated. ????[Omar Wanis] “And is it effective as multi-threading in 3D softwares like Houdini, or it has many limitations?”
Houdini also has its limitations and things that run on a single thread too. There are only so many things that can run in parallel, some stuff has to happen in sequence.
I grabbed a screenshot last night of my home computer while I was rendering in AE CC 2018, but I forgot to put it somewhere where I could get to it this morning to show you! Anyway, you can see all of the threads spinning up and doing different levels of activity. So, they were all doing different tasks at once and they were all working. Granted, they weren’t all hitting 100% – the whole CPU system was hovering around 50% power, but I have a dual Xeon system, so there were a lot of cores going at once.
[Andrew Somers] “Are those CUDA specific? Because I thought the trend was to go to Open CL, instead of being tied to nVidia.”
As Walter says, on PC, they can use CUDA (and that’s usually the fastest option if you have an NVIDIA card), but they’ll also work with OpenCL on NVIDIA or AMD cards and, on Macs, they can do OpenCL or Metal (and with each new version of AE, the Metal implementation is improving).
