We have done a side by side by side. 300, 500, and a 3000.

The 300 is a great 2nd camera for the 500. However we were using the 18×4.2 lens not the 17x that comes with it. We also have the ACM-17 to switch between lens if we ever need to. Can you tell the difference yes. Can you tell after the upconversion to 1080i ?
The 300 is a great 2nd or insert camera, We have done a few music events where the 300 is the on stage camera with the 18x and the 500 has the 22x lens. The work flow, timecode, etc work fine. Both have the Vari frame rates.
We tested all three cameras on a 24 Panasonic LCD. We rent the cameras. The 300s go out alot more then the 3000.

300 blacks v 500 blacks = 300 not quiet as strong in the black department. But for 10k, it looks great.

I agree with everything the previous post said( from Mike)
you also woudl want to simplfy your camera systems ( seel of the other 3 cameras and buy two HPX-300’s. You will make your life easier all the way around and have a camera if needed cam use rcp’s.

I have tested this camera and did a comparison against the HPX-500 and the HDX-900 with dps ,producers to see the difference. Could they tell- some could but most were very impressed with all the options. They liked the inexpensive camera that feels like a eng camera and the built in wave/vector as well.

The lens that comes with the camera is just that… a lens( it works and if the client does not have the money it works fine). However the 18x looks great. Our rental inventory is 80% Panasonic. If you did not tell the broadcaster what it was shot on I would be surprised if they could tell that it was with a 1/3 inch chip. Power consumption is at 17w compared to 36w from the 900.

The vari frame rates look great from docs and epk’s,etc. I have picked up a ACM-17 to see how B4 mount lenses work on the 300 as well.

They do make a eye cover that closes when you eye is not pressed against the viewfinder. Its ok, but saves you $%# when you have a sony 10k color vf.

I have to say I have read most of the threads but not all. This camera will work very well for a certain market. You can use most if not all the same gear that you have for all your other cameras, 3000,F-900 etc. The frame rates are a plus the cost is low. I figured most rental companies would rent them for approx 500 to 600 per week, plus the cost of P2 cards and with the E series thats even better. Its not the end all be all camera. I would be suprised if anyone could tell the difference watching on a televison at home if the footage was shot with this camera compard to a PDW-700 or even a Varicam.
I like having the options of the frame rates and that I can use P2 cards on many different and highier end cameras in the future.
