Without a codec everything would have to be uncompressed and everyone would need to be purchasing $10K Raid systems to be able to view video.
There are a lot of codec because there are different needs for different purposes. All these small cameras use some type of mpg4 (H264 is one of them) because people want cheap solutions and to be able to record a long time on a cheap 16 or 32 GB card vs. say P2 card with gets 1-2.4 minute per GB and the cards cost 10x the same size SD/CF card. When editing you want a balance between size, data rate and a codec that will hold up to modification as well as one that doesn’t need as much processor to decode it. Enter ProRes for FCP. It is a great balance of all these but your files are 10x the size of the H264.
Now as for your problem, you need to give your system specs. These cameras are shooting 1080p 30 0r 24 fps, Lower end systems with slower HDs will lag.

Export a movie with current settings. Open this movie in QT play it should look currect, with the black bars on top and bottom. Take this file into Compressor compress it to the codec of your choice and make sure aspect ratio is set to 4:3.

So you are asking me to give a specific answer to a unspecified question by another person.Generic answers for DVD-R compatibility
Always use a top shelf brand of DVD-Rs (I only use Maxell Plus Series but others have their own recommendations)
Never go over 7 Mbps bitrate for CBR or VBR’s max setting

Not all BluRay players will play DVD-R disc. If you want the most compatible disc you need to replicate them (which is normally at least a run of 1000). DVD-R will never be 100% compatible.The is never a reason to use DVD+R over DVD-R (except for dual layer disc, which it is recommended using DVD DL+R).

The main difference is going to be the codec you what to capture to. With AJA boxes, you can capture to any number of codecs DV-ProRes-Uncompressed, with Canopus type bridges the video is always converted to DV. The AJA devices are also from video monitoring on a professional level. They are have a much steeper cost.
As far as 10-bit, unless you plan to color correct your captured video this will not even come into play. You can still color correct 8-bit just fine but 10-Bit gives you a little more room to play with, but unless you are planning on putting in the effort and time you are just taking up extra space on the HD.
As for myself, I would get an AJA box that had Analog in because it can do so much more than capture VHS, but if you are not planning on using it for an external monitor than it may not be worth the extra price for you.

Because I’m flying blind, help with a couple of people on FCE but don’t own it, I would say the issue with having to render 1920x was because the timeline was set up for 1440x. 1440x is a HDV thin raster, I would never recommend transcoding true 1920x to that (unless you really have to). The computer actually has to do a lot more work to convert each frame as it plays to display the video correctly.
Anyway AIC is available on FCE and it recommended for the highest quality for FCE, everything else a lot more compressed. Once this step is done you have to match your sequence to the footage, Codec, frame size, frame rate and you should be okay.
FCE is a semi-professional app that is geared towards a very specific workflow for very specific camera formats. Once your footage is converted to what the app can handle with have a much higher end editing tool vs. iMovie.

By definition Autosave just happens if you are forcing it it is not “AUTO” but you can do a save or save as. But there is no versioning in FCP that gives you auto-naming so you have to name each save as.

This is really a case of you not doing your homework. If your system does not have PCI 2. slots the Mac versions of the PCI 2 ATI cards will still work, but they are not supported so you install them at your own risk. Some non-Mac PCI graphic cards can flashed to work, but they have to have the Mac counter part (from what I’ve read) but this is also a do it at our own risk thing. But by gambling you can save money and get a fast card than what is in spec, but it is a gamble and they don’t always pay off. But if you want to be safe you go to a place like Macsales,com, look up graphic cards for your computer and they tell you what is available. You put that in your system.
But your rant is like if I order a Nissan part from Napa and complained that it didn’t work in my Honda.
