Well that would require another piece of Io equipment, and they are close to a grand. The Matrox boxes are a good fit because they can move from the laptop to the desktop just by getting a PCIe interface card.

If you are doing anything with sound I would get the mixer and good speakers next.

The issue is the camera using a true 24p framerate, so it just doesn’t play well with others. If you use a Canon or the GH1 they record at 23.98 so cutting into video much easier. If you have that option.

If you drop in the converted codec clips while it is still at 24 fps does it go out of sync in the other directions?

Maybe try the retiming in compressor Set Duration to 24 @ 23.98, this maybe the same thing that CinemaTools is doing but worth a shot.

Have you tried? It would not hurt to just do something like this.

I have never recaptured subclips but I would think you would need to make the independent to break the relationship of the footage on either side. But once this is done why not recapture and then rename the clips, seems like that would be the same amount of work but in a different order.

But if you have already renamed the clips just give it a shot. When you make the footage offline just more the clips to another folder for safe keeping, if it doesn’t work you can bring them back and relink.

But then the question that comes to my mind is why are you even going to the trouble, if you make independent the clips will act just like if they where captured as smaller clips.

That is not a nikon issue, that is a generic time lapse issue. If set the camera on manual you get less but this only works if lighting is not dropping or rising greatly like at sunset or sunrise. For these I use Av and let the camera chase the exposure. I also set the camera at -2/3 Ev. I found that the Exposure Smoothing in the new AE CS5 does a great job is reducing this flicker. There are other filters out there also but don’t have the names handy or experience with them. The great thing about using a DSLR for time lapse is you have a lot of image to work with to do pushes and pans. (https://vimeo.com/13323412 this was before I got CS5 so it has a little flicker).

The problem with filming at video rate is that you really have to speed it up a lot to make it look good. That would require a lot of time. Basically 1 hours gets you a good 30 secs (give or take) But the footage can be sped up nicely in just about anything. You may have to play with it and maybe add a filter to your liking. But you have a much better chance of getting the lighting.

That sound, those things are a nightmare, will not work is slot load drives (pisses off 1/2 the Mac users out there) but I would never put one of them in any DVD player or drive I have, many many horror stories of them spinning out of control within a drive. Just my 2 cents.

Every time you render something you are compressing to HDV, that is bad, time consuming, wrong is every sense. Go back and stay with ProRes.

I would rent a dslr system a couple of times to put it through it’s paces. The post workflow is almost identical with P2, just going to ProRes vs DVCProRes.

I wouldn’t even think of selling until you are sure you don’t need tradition video anymore. But you can rent either if you are in a fairly good size city.

Have you tried SoundTrack Pro, you have to find the balance between the noise reduction and the quality of the vocals. (which you should be able to vary in Soundsoap also)
