What versions are you using? This was a common problem with earlier versions of Compressor.
While a lot of people knock compressor, I have been able to get great encodes out of it. My method is to go from FCP timelines – via Export to Compressor. Then I do CBR encodes. You can use 6.5Mbps with ac3 audio and it should look good. Do short test and if you are still getting washed out encodes you can start modifying with the filters, you need to do testing in steps.

Uncompressed 10 Bit and for the HD you would have to go to Uncompressed 8 bit to fit on a DVD-R. I love the DVCProHD codec but once again not every editing system can use it (but a lot more than ProRes)

Well 1st thing a ProRes file can only be used on a FCP 6 workstation, nothing else. Not even FCP 5, so unless they are FCP and up-to-date that file is useless. Then DV is not really a broadcast standard, some stations will accept it but it is on the lowend of the SD scale. If I shot something with a RED camera and I found out it was delivered as a DV file for broadcast I would be PISSED! But hey that’s just me.
If you were sending out DBetas or even BetaSP tapes I wouldn’t recommend calling but anything like files I would, but then again that is me. I would rather waste a couple minutes on the phone than risk sending files that are not usable or incur some kind of extra processing charge for me or my client.

First, I don’t think you are safe in your assumption. You should be asking what formats stations can and will accept. DV is a less than desirable format if you spot has graphics in it.
But I have found the only do way to do from HD (1080i to SD) is exporting through compressor because there is a field order shift when going from HD to SD.
This is going to be time consuming any way you go.

Not to knock other brands but I really like OWC drives (Macsales.com). They are a great company and I think their prices per GB maybe the lowest. I have probably purchased 30 of there drives over the years. Of the ones I still have in my possession they are still working. I have 100 GB drives that are going on 7 years old. Love the quad interface enclosures, use them for ETT via the eSATA when I use the Io with my MBP.

Nope, Letterbox to anamorphic needs to be scaled around 135% and aspect adjusted to about 33%. No way around this. This is not a limitation with FCP, this is geometry issue, you cannot scale in only one direction without distorting the image.

Either or. My thought is it might work best converting the final edited piece, that way the entire timeline goes through the process so quality loss is across the board. Thinking that if the loss is acceptable it won’t go in and out like it would if you only did the footage shot letterboxed.
