Eclipse Pro (not cheap) is a highly recommended piece of encoding software. Compressor is better than QT Pro (in fact just about any else is)
Most Pro software gets pricy but it allows for much higher quality at strong compression rates (smaller files with better quality is the main goal.)
Right now H.264 is the golden child of codecs and then for embedded video you got Flash. OF course this comes down to want the client wants to post.

Step 2 – Practice before actual projectIf you are not shooting interesting footage that is well lit/exposed, then a film look with not “save” the video. A film look is too enhance the final video not fix it. Also there is no way to say what will look best since that is up to you, the benefit to using a program like BM Looks it that you can go through all the Looks and find the one that you like best. A good place to start is warming up the footage and adding a slight blur to it. Magic Bullet has trial versions of the software so download it and play with it. Be aware that all this takes processing time.

Which movie? They all look different.
One of the easiest things to do to help is to shoot in the 24F mode.
There is a program called Magic Bullet Looks that can help stylize the look to be like specific films.

You can add the filter to one clip set it up then copy the audio clip and highlight all the other clips and pasted attributes > filters and it will be applied to all.
The other way would be to export the track to a solid aiff and then bring that back in, disable the originals.

Since this is for college kids you need to speed up the cuts, big time, need a lot more shots to do it but you don’t need to stay on anything long at all. Also cut to the music.
Always get in the habit of color correcting, Even basic 3-way would go a long way.

Are you sure they are shot in slow motion, the varicam always records at 60 fps but that doesn’t mean that it is slow motion. But the deck cannot do a standards conversion (NTSC to PAL) You have to capture as NTSC 60, then do the conversion via software or send the tape off to something that does conversion.
Is there sound on the tape? Not sure about the varicam but I know the P2 panasonic cameras that do slow mo do not record audio when using that feature since the audio would be distorted.

The HVX shoots SD to tape (DV25 only) but there is a 24pA mode that when captured into FCP the pull down is removed and you have true 23.98 frame rate (24P). You lose the slow feature without the P2 and shooting 720p/24p though.
Yes there are several steps of slow-mo, I think the panasonic website list them.
