I believe the program is to be played back on DigiBeta so this workflow sounds perfect.

Thanks. I usually bring in all my footage Component or SDI if possible. I had heard that it was better to bring DV/ DVCAM/ DVCPRO footage in firewire to gain the most out of it. However since I mix formats often I find that if I bring in the footage as DV then I’ll have to render it on the timeline and convert it anyway.

I guess the question will be how the DVCPRO 50 handles the 24p. If it downconverts out the analog or SDI outputs, if available, then I’m all set with Uncompressed 10-bit.

I recently gave a clip to a friend who has AJA and it seems he was able to play it no problem.
Next step will be to create a sample project.

I couldn’t find an Igniter Codec on their site. It can be installed from the custom install of the Igniter disk.
But, it appears that since it is compatible with Apple’s Extreme 8-bit Uncompressed that maybe they are interchangeable.

Do you have a preference for Blackmagic over AJA?

    Thanks for your response,

July 9, 2005 at 3:45 pm in reply to: FCP color bars vs. Igniter color bars

I determined that the discrepancy in the levels had to do with viewing a still frame of Bars and Tone in the viewer as opposed to playing the Bars and Tone.
The other issue was that FCP doesn’t have a center, 7.5 IRE, pluge in the Viewer Bars and Tone.
I just used Print to Video on a test sequence with 60 seconds of Bars and Tone, which gave me the center pluge to adjust the brightness on my NTSC Monitor.

    Thanks for your response,

I still don’t get the 3 bars, but I did notice a shift in brightness when playing the bars as opposed to sitting on a still frame of the color bars. Thus, playing bars in the viewer or timeline does give the same result as the print to video bars, less the middle pluge.

So, I’ll just use print to video to set up my monitor.

    Thanks for your help,

    David,

That is what I usually do. Without the center pluge bar it makes it a bit of a guess.

I ended up doing a test print to video with bars and tone and that output the bars with all three pluge bars.
These bars levels were similar to the Igniter bars levels. I would trust these bars since that is what will go to tape and be the reference for any dubs or playback of the master.

I find it odd that FCP would have a discrepency with it’s out output (to tape) color bars and it’s Bars and Tone (NTSC) from the viewer.
