  • Assuming the file name for the proxies are the same, or have a _extension name on them should allow you to relink to selected when you are done, where the “relink to selected” are your camera masters. If doing multicam, commit multicam edits before relinking. Link to both the proxy and the camera master and look at the Source File column and report back what you see.

What codec and data rate for the proxies? I would try a quick test in a multicam setup to ensure it plays as multicam. Avid’s native codecs have better performance, so you might want to test that first.

  • In camera proxies are generated to save time in post rather than having to generate then again in the NLE. I am assuming that the proxies have the same LUT as the masters baked in?

Editing with proxies in general regardless of how they were made is about performance. Linking to a proxy has a better chance at performance than linking to the 4K UHD version. But that also depends on what codec and date rate the proxies have been created at.

You are not forced to work one way or the other -if you want to link to the 4K UHD, do so, try and see if editing works. If it does, good. If not, you can transcode from there.

Also keep in mind that if a clip has multiple audio tracks, they will be a separate file in the MediaFile folder for each one. For example, if XDCAM with 8 audio tracks recorded, it would be 9 tracks for 1 clip. Not saying this explains all of them, but just something to keep in mind.

  • Also, using Avid’s group by waveform for clip based audio sync can work, but it is a painful process if you want to keep clip name, and have it be a .sync clip that tracks out of sync in the timeline. I describe the process in my blog:

If you just want to use it as a group clip, you can, but may have other issues arise later such as relinking and such if needed.

Horizon App records horizontal anyway when holding the phone vertically.

But as with all things, knowing your destination is key. Social mobile video? Vertical may be better.
Inserting user generated video into broadcast? Horizontal.
Don’t know? Deal with it. ☺

Storytelling and viewer engagement methodologies have been changing since storytelling began. So I am all for new methods to be explored. On a related note, here are some stats for vertical viewing.

Other studies have shown that for videos shown on phone devices that vertical videos have longer viewing engagement than horizontal videos. Yes, it may be due to laziness to turn a phone, but the numbers bear out and marketers keep that in mind when trying to delivery their message via video.

Refer to the Blackmagic User Manual which is very well written and search for PAR (pixel aspect ratio) and anamorphic. You will see reference to clip attributes as seen in this screenshot to deal with your anamorphic material in Resolve.

2048×858 is a 2.39:1. so you will need to keep that in mind for both of your sources that are not that aspect ratio. If you want to do everything in Media Composer, you can. Assuming that you are in a more recent version of Media Composer, create the DCI project directly to start and work from there. AMA link to the sources and you will have some room on the 2048×1536 material to tilt and scan if needed.

You may have some performance issues depending on your overall setup. If so, you can transcode to DNxHR preserving your original sources. It will either be used as a proxy for offline, then relink back to your masters for finishing or to a DNxHR SQ minimum or the higher 444 RGB. How you color correct and monitor for DCP in MC may be more challenging that within in MC.

  • Look for the bin that has all the original audio files that were imported the first time. Select those and do a batch re-import to the files themselves. You will not need to re-edit, or rename anything.

    Michael

  • You will want to do it while the clip is AMA linked. Right click on the master clip icon in the bin and select “source settings” or load the clip in the source monitor and right-click the image and select “source settings” from there.
