I will let others who have more experience with AvidFX speak to that comparison, but Media Composer on its own cannot do what After Effects offer in VFX creation. It can do a subset, and most likely a small subset if one were to count. AvidFX (Boris product) adds more control over VFX creation and will get you much closer to After Effects and may in your case be all that you need.

With sequence in timeline, go to the Special menu and select “video mixdown. You can use Resolve’s scene detection to add edits back in.

I just opened a sample file I was given and had no problem. MC7 AMA, Resolve, etc. My system has MC, FCPx, and Compressor. James only has FCPx so Compressor may be the app needed to install the proper codec in the QuickTime library.

Does Resolve Lite (free) see the footage correctly? If so, you can transcode directly to native MXF/DNxHD codec there.

Whichever device that is creating these MXF files seems to not be properly created a SOURCE ID in the Tape column as Source File is still only created when importing or AMA linking directly to the file. I find many “DITs” transcoding Avid dailies without any regard for properly setting up REEL to be tracked later for AAF, EDL, relink, etc. I blogged about it and perhaps this is the same issue?

How was the media brought in originally? AMA linked clips with unique Source File and timecode as source should work fine for Dupe Detection.
Look at your “Source File” column and let us know what it says for a handful of clips.

Good point, Xpress Pro does not have AMA support. I was thinking of making it managed media and duplicated Avid MediaFiles folder in two different locations.

The bandwidth alone required for that to happen would never work. Your best bet is to create small proxies for editorial and send those via dropbox, WeTransfer, or other shared/send file solutions. If duplicate media exists in both areas and is managed by Avid, it is easy to send bins/sequences back and forth during editorial.
Avid does provide for an Avid Everywhere with editorial over browser, but requires ISIS storage, Interplay, then additional options on top of that to make it work. You’re talking 6 figures to get that working.
