Well it can be done, but it does take some trial and error. In order for Media Composer to import an ALE, all columns must match Avid column exact if they are to be mapped to those columns. If not, they become custom colummns or may not work. Merging an ALE is even more stringent – The following three columns must match exactly, uppercase, lowercase and timecode:

EndAs mentioned timecode has to match exactly or it won’t merge. There is no concept of a fuzzy merge based on other common metadata fields (a long time request).
The header has become redundant over the years and I was really pushing for Avid to finally get rid of it with the latest version, but they did not. They kept it… arrrgh. The other issue is that line breaks are senstive and I’ve seen issues coming from Excel where they were not correct. “Cleaning an ALE” is a feature from the film to tape days that would check that there was no overlapping timecode in a file. You can turn this off.
Syntax errors can be a bunch of different things, and needs to be managed error by error. I’ll take a look at one of your ALE files from Excel if you want to see if I can fix it. Once it works, you can see what changes were done for your other files. Send to michael[at]24p[dot]com

I am all for the “buy as much RAM as you can afford”. But when transcoding, CPU and GPU do a lot of the processing and depending on drive(s) and speed of drives, RAM will have less value. I also recommend that one reads from one set of drive(s) and write to another drive (separate bus, not two drives on the same USB for example).

I need to test AAF with logged metadata – I always merge an ALE to be sure. As far as writing a blog – I’ll throw it on the pile to be considered when there is time to write one. 🙂

Scratch Play is great for playing back media types, but it cannot export a any metadata files other than LUT and ASC CDL, nor has a real logging interface other than color management and manipulation.

They changed the way AMA is accessed between versions. Select AMA link for volume or file.

The challenge with logging software is a careful balance between ease of use, and feature set. Most of the standalone logging systems are no longer available, and even Avid has EOL’d Avid MediaLog (which did not work file-based anyway). Adobe Prelude works with PPro, and I suppose if someone were to create an XML to ALE conversion you could get some of the metadata – Markers are not something that can be imported via a text file.
I did a quick test with Resolve Lite (free) which reads a lot of different formats, but it too can be a lot of overhead for what should be a simple logging interface. One could argue the same thing with using a free trial or monthly rental of Media Composer for the same task. In Resolve, I am able to log multiple clips with one text entry if desired, lots of data fields available. The process of getting that info to Media Composer requires some steps in knowing how to use Resolve – such as make a timeline from MediaPool clips, export ALE, then you need to do some text editing of the ALE in order to properly merge an ALE onto the masters clips (master clips only for merging), etc. SO it can be done, but it is not a beginner level type logging program dedicated to logging only.

Would all these applications be running at the same time (or some of them). 16GB is fine for any one of them, I would consider 32GB if running several at the same time.

The OP was asking about v7 Media Composer. DPX AMA link was introduced in v8.0 and refined in 8.2. DPX AMA export was part of the 8.3 release.

The first thing to try is right-clicking your sequence, and select “Relink”. Towards the bottom of the overly complex dialog box, there is a selection by which you can select a target resolution, in your case 175. See if that does the trick, if not, then we can move on to the next method.

Autodetect does not work well at all with any format expecting to use a card structure of folder hierarchy. Always select actual plug-in to avoid madness.
