  • That’ll give you time to fill up the cards.

  • Definitely not normal. If you have AppleCare or even if not, take it to an Apple Store or some place like it and have it checked out.
I had problems and it turned out there were two little silica gel balls inside the slot. They ruined the board which then needed to be replaced (causing intermittent connection when it got warm).

I’ve been to the Apple Store….
At first I couldn’t reproduce the problem. Transfers using the SxS card went perfectly. So I’m standing there with the Apple Genius not being able to reproduce the problem that’s been plaguing my machine over the last coupla days.
(Actually, last night I was able to transfer clips through the clip browser one-by-one and then three-by-one with no problem).

Today I tried a mass transfer in front of the guru and of course it worked perfectly. So we went to the console and looked at the panic log. As we were doing this it crashed.

The difference was that the computer had been operating for awhile and had built up heat. I wasn’t running any other programs and had long since quit Clip Browser.

We ran multiple tests on the computer and everything checked out all ok. I suspect, however that there is something else happening. It may be only my computer, but it may happen to others as well.

This is one of the early 15 in. MacBook Pros with the 667MHz bus speed. I think the architecture in the newer machines can handle the stress of the faster throughput of the SxS cards better, even though this one is rated to be able to handle it. It also may be pointing up a hardware flaw in my i/o circuit on the motherboard.
At this point I don’t know, but those of you who have the earlier version of MacBook Pro may run into the same problem.

I’ll next try mass transfers using the USB i/o from the camera. I suspect I won’t have any problems, but it’ll just take longer.

Re: post above. I’m a little confused about how one transfers from the SxS card to other media.
You’ve mentioned above use of the clip browser software to split the material and transfer it to DVD…
After my post, I tried a straight copy from the SxS card to my archive HD. During the transfer, I got a device removal warning (the card was no longer visible on the desktop) and the transfer stopped. Subsequently the computer required a restart to recognize the card. There was no kernal panic (see my post above) this time, though it took a long time to bring the computer back up and I had many permissions to repair.
My guess is there’s something going on with the card reader driver.
If this workflow is going to work it needs to be ironclad reliable and simple for the client to deal with. It’s already a hard sell, so it’s got to work.

I forgot to add that I am using OS 10.4.11…I’ve added a reply to the post below concerning this problem as well.

I’m also at a loss generally in this area. Is there a kenstone article about what exactly you do to prepare a sequence for export to Sorenson Squeeze or Cleaner or any other number of sequence re-purposers other than Compressor?
Is there a ‘Squeeze’ plug-in that allows direct export from FCP. I’m not clear about the workflow from FCP to Sorenson Squeeze specifically. I’ve looked on various forums and article databases, but haven’t found anything…thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for all your advice. In fact it is a quicktime 44.1 file already. Surprisingly, when I imported it to FCP and rendered it in the timeline, as you said, the quality maintaned itself pretty well.
I had had problems with this in the past from a music source who provided only mp3 files, but this time it worked better.

  • After reading the pre-sales FAQs at Automatic Duck and checking out the AD forum I’ve had these questions answered.
I’m sure I’ll have questions, but it looks like a great program (as many have said).

  • I still think it would be easier to just do the QT conversion. I am forced to use Compressor
which isn’t altogether a bad thing. It’s just that it seems I have to jump through a few more
    unnecessary hoops.

  • That’s what I was thinking.
However, I find in many cases simpler is better.
