What did you edit and finish at? Transcoding that to 1:1 or DNxHD220x (if you didn’t finish at that) is just wasted space – no quality is added.

If it means anything – for comparison, DNxHD145 is broadcast quality.

Visually, DNxHD220 is virtually indistinguishable from 1:1, even at the scope level. 1:1 also takes up (ballpark) 10x more space than DNxHD220. Do you have that kind of drive space?

January 12, 2011 at 3:57 pm in reply to: SXS backup to XDCAM?

When you say “Backup to XDCAM” are you referring to XDCAM HD – the BluRay disks?

Also, do you want to backup the files with a drag and drop method, or do you want to use FCP or Avid to write them as video to the disc?

Last I heard (perhaps Sony has changed this) the “data” portion of an XDCAM HD BluRay disc was very small (i.e. drag and drop) – the rest was reserved for camera and/or NLE “video” data.

  • I applaud you for looking into a qualified configuration. All to often, people disregrad thius and just buy what they like, which can cause massive problems.

This is the Avid page with the current specs. Click on the SEE DETAILS link under PC and Mac for a PDF of the current models on both Mac and PC. For PC, I prefer HP over Dell. Better warranty and customer service, IMHO.

Adrenaline is end of lifed – current incarnations of Avid + hardware are with the Mojo DX, Nitris DX, or Matrox MXO2Mini (output only)

    Hope this helps!

January 11, 2011 at 4:24 pm in reply to: To transcode or not?

    Couple of workflows and questions:

What flavor of XDCAM? SD, HD, or EX?

Are you doing alot of effects work, color timing, etc. in your MC timeline? Is your machine older? If so, DNxHD is better.

Is this a reality show or a doc? Then it may be best to do the XDCAM proxy video & high res audio workflow, then switch to high res video after the edit.

It should be noted that anything AMA has limitations in terms of track count and RT performance. Although the XDCAM workflow via AMA is more robust than the Quicktime AMA workflow, there are still a few hiccups to be aware of.

If you have the time, I always recommend going to a DNxHD flavor over a camera native.

    My Kingdom for one!

I think many of us have been begging for one for years. The Pioneer LX-1 was fantastic! Many of us hoped that Pioneer would come out with one for BluRay….nothing thus far.

For HD, the only way I’ve found is kluging devices together. B&H, actually, is selling a bundle which does exactly what we’ve been piecing out for a while:

Other solutions are a bit more manual, unfortunately.

Perhaps there are solutions coming out at NAB this year….?

You most likely will not need the DV Toolkit.

Most of the features of DV Toolkit were rolled (free) into v.9.

January 8, 2011 at 7:37 pm in reply to: Importing Files

Glad things are beginning to work.

Audio requires codecs, too. However, there are fewer Audio codecs than Video, so before hunting for other codecs, ensure that the basics are covered: you can hear audio from other sources, volume is up, etc. Try a test tone out of avid to verify.

If you’re absolutely certain it’s the file – and not your settings – than use Media Info and VLC the same way to determine the audio codec.
