  • Disk utility first then update/format in the camera. Select 32.46GB multiple card when using disk utility. Just be aware that doing all of this will erase ALL data on the card.

  • First, don’t go through XDCam transfer to FCP. Just use the Log and Transfer in FCP. Second, try updating the card in the EX1 menu. Menu>Other>Clip>Update.

Regardless of the outcome, keep in mind SDHC cards need monthly maintenance if you’re using them in a EX1 or EX3. On your MAC, go to Applications>Utilities>>Disk Utility. On the left, select the SD card. On the right, click ERASE to erase all contents on the card. Next, click REPAIR to repair the card. When you put the card in the camera you’ll get a message saying the card needs formatted. Format the card in the camera and you’re good to go for three weeks or so. Once you start getting errors, repeat the process to the card. I work in news shooting on an EX3 on SDHC cards and have to do this every other week. Hope it helps.

  • Anything above -3db gain on the NX5U is going to have some grain in the blacks.

SxS cards are no harder to find than P2. It’s a professional form of media so you can’t just walk into Walmart or Best Buy to get them. SxS is going strong and is Sony’s preferred media with new SxS cameras like the PMW100 and PMW200 recently hitting the market. Because they are professional, they are expensive. Go to https://www.bhphotovideo.com and you’ll find everything you need.

First, I can’t believe people are already complaining about what this camera doesn’t have. Second, no current SDHC card on the market can handle writing at 50Mbs. The top level card can only capture at 45Mbs. Put in a SDHC card in this camera using an SxS adapter and it’s going to fail. Sony had no choice. It’s either SxS or CompactFlash which is just as expensive. This is clearly the top non-shoulder mount camera available today and some of you need to stop complaining and cut Sony some slack. If you can’t afford SxS cards you likely can’t afford this camera anyway.

Rumors are (via a Sony insider) it’s a 3 chip version of the PMW-100 (single chip) but that’s just a rumor and that person has been wrong before so we’ll have to wait and see.

Yes, I use log & transfer. I set it to transcode to ProRes LT. That’s quicker than ProRes or ProRes HQ. 50 minted takes about 40 minutes to load. However, I shoot first half on one card and second half on another and start loading card one at halftime and card two on the drive home since I don’t have to have anything FTP’d until midnight.

I have an NX5U and edit on a MacBook Pro running FCP. My advice is shoot everything HD and just down convert the final edit to SD. It will look better. I shoot a lot of high school football. The NX5U is excellent for your needs.

The issue is with you running XP, which doesn’t support the AVCHD format natively. The OS is missing components needed to properly play the video. All AVCHD users on a PC need to be on Windows 7. Google AVCHD and Windows XP for technical explanations. There is a patch you can install but it’s complicated and has been known to cause serious issues with other programs when installed.

  • I ran main cam for a company that produced game films, with announcers, for an area high school team. 4 cams run back to the switcher in the truck. Output 1 to a hard drive recorder and output 2 to a Blu-Ray recorder, pausing at each timeout and/or quarter. Immediately after the game, the Blu-Ray was given to the coach and the hard drive copy was used to author DVD copies for each player which was delivered Monday morning. Worked fine every week with no issues.
