Do you have the source side track for the video/audio you want to match frame activated in your patch panel? If you don’t, it won’t match frame anything.

When it’s done compressing, click the word Done. A log file will pop up and you can find the info in there.

Once you get this resolved, if you want to start playing with keyboard shortcuts again just go to your settings tab, select the keyboard setting, and hit Cmd+D (Mac) or Ctrl+D (PC) to duplicate them. You can name them too, so you can have a separate keyboard setting for Color Correction, Effects, Editing, etc…
I think you can link them to workspaces too, which is awesome. Change your workspace, keyboard settings automatically change with them.

You could make a 1920×1080 canvas in photoshop and create a 1648×472 “videosafe” overlay, start a 1920×1080 project in Avid and drop it on the top video track at 50% opacity. Cut your piece and keep the important stuff inside the overlay, then export to After Effects and render out the final movie there.
And if you’re not familiar with Avid, here’s a nice keyboard shortcut (I hope I’m remembering this right) – Alt+Ctrl+Y. It will open a dialogue box asking what track number you want to make. I’d make the video track for the overly V10 or something – it won’t automatically make the other nine video tracks either, keeping your timeline manageable. If you need another video track just hit Ctrl+Y and it will add V2, V3, V4, etc… until it hits V10. Lets add 9 video tracks until you hit the overlay.

Nice! I didn’t realize they did this. The way I’ve heard people on these and other forums talk I just assumed you had to haul your system to an Apple store or ship it in. Our in-house IT handles everything with our Macs, so I was unaware they actually had a business division like that. Do you pay extra for it or is this covered under the standard warranty (or AppleCare)?

HP and Dell workstations aren’t really sold in consumer box stores. Maybe you could find them at BH in New York or a VAR near you, but they’ve never been available at Best Buys or HH Greggs or CompUSA. And there is no Dell store or HP store like there is an Apple store, so you’re comparing apples to oranges. But I do think it’s silly for Apple to stock more than one MacPro.

Friend of mine has the Z400. Had a problem with it, called HP, a tech came to his house and switched the motherboard, no charge. It was a warranty repair and HP came to him. No hauling the system to the store or anything. That’s what you get when you buy their professional grade workstation – professional grade service, as you should expect.
When we had an issue with the xw8200 (predecessor to the 8400 which was before the z800) at the TV station I worked at, a tech came there too and swapped out parts when we had an issue. I think it’s easier for them to just replace an entire motherboard in 20 minutes then to troubleshoot for hours while you stand there losing money. I thought it was a pretty smart strategy, really.
But really, Apple stores probably don’t stock or sell a lot of MacPros so I couldn’t put too much weight on not finding them in the stores, but it has been an awfully long time since there’s been a substantial update.
Time will tell.

You can actually open as many timelines as you want – you switch between them using the fast menu in the upper right of the source monitor. They just aren’t tabbed like FCP.
If you want to cut between them or compare them do what Shane said.

Cheaper? Won’t Calibrated’s MXF work? It’s $250. That’s pretty cheap. As far as installing a new OS – Media Composer 6 is approved for Lion but has been reported working under Snow Leopard 10.6.8. What OS are you on?
What expensive gear will be rendered useless if you buy one copy of Media Composer specifically to handle Avid files sent to you (like the Italy job)? Why be difficult on purpose? If you don’t want to buy a copy of Media Composer that’s fine, but you can’t deny that it’s a fast, simple, and relatively inexpensive solution to a problem.

Because a Quicktime ProRes is a Quicktime ProRes. An MXF is not an MXF is not an MXF, hence why the Hyperdeck is acquisition MXF only (I’m assuming – haven’t used one to see how it actually captures the footage – going off theory here).
Personally, I don’t see .mxf being requested much at all, but DNxHD added to the list of acceptable codecs, yes. It’s been around longer than ProRes and proved reliable, it’s SMPTE certified, and it looks like more and more companies are supporting it. I don’t expect ProRes to disappear though unless Apple kills it completely. You’ll get the choice to deliver one or the other.
