You got it. I’m super happy to use third party cards with Avid, but this is one area they definitely need to do some more work in. You can toggle the video monitor on and off with version 6 and 6.5 (maybe prior versions too, but I’ve haven’t tried it) so you can use an external monitor or the full screen functionality, but you can’t route the audio.

Hit up the Avid feature request forum – the more people that request it the more likely it might be that this is addressed.

Avid always outputs via a third party card if one is installed. If you need it to output from your computer speakers you need to remove the Blackmagic card.

I wish they would change this.

In addition, if this is an actual network drive you need to open the console (cmd+6 on a Mac or Ctrl+6 on a PC) and type “alldrives” without the quotes. Hit return. This forces Avid to see network drives as available media drives. Relaunch the program and see if your media is back online.

My mistake – on Windows it is Alt+Tab.

I am on a Mac, but used to be on Windows (about 2 years ago). I believe I was running Vista and Media Composer 5 and it worked there. I thought I remembered it working on XP too (I Alt+Tabbed by accident and Avid kept playing), but I might have been on a different version of Avid than 3.5.9.

Maybe keep trying it at random to see if it works at some point. Or reboot and try again. Or it just might not work – which would be a shame. It’s super useful.

Open Avid. Open Word. Start playing in Avid, Cmd+Tab to Word if you’re on a Mac. Ctrl+Tab if you’re on a PC. Avid will keep playing and you can type away. It’s what I’ve been doing all day transcribing interviews. Works great.

Not entirely accurate. ScriptSync is now an add on (at a hefty $1,000), but Symphony still comes with:

Avid DVD
AvidFX
Boris Continuum Complete
Sorenson Squeeze
Other Avid software (EDL Manager, Film Scribe, etc…)

Now as to which version of Squeeze it comes with, I have no idea. But it does come with some version of it.
