Logging While Avid Is Playing
Posted by Sean Schmolz on January 31, 2013 at 5:14 pmHi good folk,
This might not be possible, but I don’t like to think that’s ever true.
We would like to log from an Avid. 2 screens. Avid on one, Word on another. Don’t want Avid to stop playing when you click off of it.
Is there any way to do this? Perhaps a console command?
Thanking you in advance.
Sean

January 31, 2013 at 5:16 pmOpen Avid. Open Word. Start playing in Avid, Cmd+Tab to Word if you’re on a Mac. Ctrl+Tab if you’re on a PC. Avid will keep playing and you can type away. It’s what I’ve been doing all day transcribing interviews. Works great.

January 31, 2013 at 5:36 pmHi Michael,
Thanks for that. Just tried this and it didn’t work, that just tabs between what Avid window is selected. Tried Alt and Tab, and that got me to Notepad (haven’t installed Word yet) but Avid stopped playing.
I am on Windows XP, Media Composer 3.5.9 (yes old but just going to be used for a logging station…)
Are you on Mac? Perhaps it’s a limitation of Windows?
Cheers,
Sean

January 31, 2013 at 6:47 pmMy mistake – on Windows it is Alt+Tab.
I am on a Mac, but used to be on Windows (about 2 years ago). I believe I was running Vista and Media Composer 5 and it worked there. I thought I remembered it working on XP too (I Alt+Tabbed by accident and Avid kept playing), but I might have been on a different version of Avid than 3.5.9.
Maybe keep trying it at random to see if it works at some point. Or reboot and try again. Or it just might not work – which would be a shame. It’s super useful.

January 31, 2013 at 6:49 pmHi Michael,
Thanks again, I might try installing Word to see whether it works with that. Would seem strange not to work with Notepad and then work with Word, but worth a try.
Thanks again,
Sean
