They had advertisements about their G5 workstations claiming they were the fasted personal computers in the world.
I suppose the takeaway there is that they said “personal computer” and not workstation. So I guess they weren’t even in the workstation game then. If the next Mac Pro isn’t a workstation, I guess they’re just returning to their roots? 🙂

Check in the General settings. In 5.5 there’s a checkbox for “Play work area after rendering previews.” I assume it’s there in v6. Uncheck it.

Not that I’m aware of. Personally, I don’t care for the way Adobe handles the project window and their bins. Subclips are just part of the problem.

As far as whether it will run Avid – I imagine it will. Whether you will have problems or not remains to be seen. The easiest way to be sure is to download the Avid trial and run it for 30 days – really put it through its paces to see if you can uncover any show stopping problems with your system.
Check here and make sure that you’re running the right graphics card driver and version of Quicktime for the version of Avid you’re running:

Select the name of the effect(s) in the Effect Panel. Cmd+C to copy (Ctrl+C on a PC). Select the clip you want to apply them to in the timeline. Cmd+V to paste (Ctrl+V on a PC).

True, but that’s because you’re always paying. When you stop paying your bills, you don’t get access to their software until you pay. So you’re licensing or renting the software, not buying it. And it only makes sense, then that you always get the upgrades. Who rents old software?
It will be very, very interesting to watch what Apple does with FCPX and upgrades, and the cost of those upgrades if they do come. If it’s a whole new purchase of the app ($299), I wonder how people will respond.

Avid has been doing major releases (.0 to .5, paid upgrades) on a 9 – 12 month schedule for a couple of years now, with minor point releases (free) scattered between .5 releases. In addition, they consistently patch and add/fix functionality in previous releases (they just released a patch for v6.0.3.2). As far as discs go – when they still shipped DVDs that version was rarely the most recent. It was common practice to get the installer and install the latest patch on top, or just buy the software, download the latest version, install it and shelf the DVD when it arrived.
While many .0.x releases from Avid are bug fixes, they’ve occasionally included new features, but often new features are saved for bigger, paid upgrades. The pricing of which has often been a point of contention with their customers. Apple has bucked that trend and isn’t charging for any updates with X, but is that because they’re being generous or are reinventing software development, or have they been playing catch-up by adding in features like multicam, which was available in 7 but not X? I imagine they’ll eventually charge for an update – I wonder how much it will be too, since the app store doesn’t allow it (yet).

I missed the bit about organizing into separate bins.
In that case, I’d just make one Subsequence bin, use the keyboard to subsequence into it (which highlights the subsequence in the bin), rename the subsequence, keyboard shortcut back to the timeline (Cmd+4, I think), repeat.
This would allow me to use the keyboard to break apart the entire sequence without the mouse. When that’s done I’d use the mouse to sort those subsequences to their individual bins.

[Pepijn Klijs] “Last little hint. Mark a selection on your timeline with an in and out point, hold down alt and drag the image from the record monitor to a bin will give you a sub sequence. It’s a fast way of organizing topics.”
Even faster – map Subclip to your keyboard and you can do it with a keystroke. When you Subclip a sequence it makes a subsequence.

What specifically does the film festival deliverable say? Do they give you a list of accepted codecs?
If they don’t, export an Avid DNxHD Quicktime, or ProRes (if you’re on a Mac and have the option).

What kind of storage do you have? Your media drives might not have enough bandwidth to handle 1080 footage. And what type of footage is this? Are you accessing it via AMA?
