So I get a call from a client to cut a couple spots…on PP CS6, a software I have never used before, besides opening it up and just putzing around.

Anyway, I take some dedicated time and am surprised how easy it is to use and how much like FCP7 it really is. After 30 years in the business I feel fortunate to have “had” to learn 2 new platforms this year in PP and FCPX. Couple of things for PP: How do I stop the automatic playback every time a render finishes in the timeline? Every time a render finishes, the playhead goes to the top of the spot and starts playing. Second, is there any way to make subclips more obvious in the browser? It’s really hard to tell in text mode and almost impossible in thumbnail mode. Am I missing the big red sign in front of me that says “SUBCLIP” or is it hard to tell?

Thanks in advance as I am sure there will be more questions coming!

[Scott Witthaus] “How do I stop the automatic playback every time a render finishes in the timeline? “

Check in the General settings. In 5.5 there’s a checkbox for “Play work area after rendering previews.” I assume it’s there in v6. Uncheck it.

[Scott Witthaus] “Second, is there any way to make subclips more obvious in the browser?”

Not that I’m aware of. Personally, I don’t care for the way Adobe handles the project window and their bins. Subclips are just part of the problem.

    Hey Scott,
I too have been in the business for a long time. I started editing 16mm film and have worked on every edit system to come along since. I’m now enjoying getting to know PP CS6.

To stop the auto playback; Preferences/General, uncheck “Play work area after rendering previews”

    Hi Scott,

I should mention that unless you are getting choppy playback, there is no need to render parts of the timeline. I don’t know what kind of Mac you work on, but if you add effects and get a yellow bar above the clip, that just means that Premiere will attempt to playback using the Mercury Engine, does not mean it needs a render. And even if it turns red, might still play back smooth enough to avoid a render. Depends on the effect and system performance.

When doing your final export using Media Encoder, it will render what needs rendering. There is a checkbox to “Use Render Previews”, but if you do that it is still re-rendering those pre-rendered clips, adding more compression, so best to leave unchecked and transcode from original clips direct to the export format.

I have very limited Mac/FCP experience from a few years back, but I recall that even adding simple effects or titles required a render. Not so with CS6, so you might need to realign the thought process a little.

Here’s some more info on rendering – https://blogs.adobe.com/premierepro/2011/02/red-yellow-and-green-render-bars.html

Thank you and welcome to Premiere!

    Thanks Paul –

Since a lot of post houses are heading towards PP (like the one I am cutting in now), its a good thing for a freelancer to have as many tools in the box as possible!
