You may have underbid him by hiring college students, Steve, but I’m going to underbid you by hiring no one–I’ll do it for FREE so I can have the experience and something to show on my demo reel. Plus, they said they were going to tell all their friends and family about it and they’ll make sure I get credit, so I’m sure the phone is going to be ringing off the hook. I’ll be swamped! Then, after a few more clients to earn “experience”, I won’t need anymore experience and I’ll be working in the big time, charging like 15 bucks an hour. I’ll be loaded. Money falling from my pocket. Now, time to look for film jobs on craigslist that offer a production credit and a free sandwich. A man has gotta eat, you know.

If you have a Mojo or Adrenaline (you don’t say what system you’re on)….
Shut down Avid. Unplug the Mojo/turn off the Adrenaline. Wait a few minutes. Plug the Mojo back in/restart the Adrenaline box. Restart Avid. Try to play it again. If it still doesn’t work, delete the media and recapture it–it’s likely corrupt. If you do have to recapture, hopefully you brought it in with accurate timecode so you can just select the clip, hit Batch Capture, then walk away while it’s brought back online.

Unless Avid stops writing its program for Windows or buys every remaining copy of XP Professional to give away with all future software purchases, they will have to work with Vista at some point. The near future though–highly unlikely. They still haven’t released an Avid product for the new Intel Macs (although it’s in beta and the word on the street is it’s nice and getting closer to release every day). Working on approving their software for a poorly received OS that still has a huge amount of problems to work out is, I’m purely guessing, low on Avid’s list of things to do. Especially since it isn’t hard to buy XP Professional, which is what Avid runs on now. Until Avid says it’s supporting Vista, stick with XP Pro. My 2 cents.

Do you mean you use a Media Composer, as in an older, hardware based system? Media Composer is now the software–Adrenaline is the break-out box.
If you use Media Composer you can use a Media Composer Adrenaline. You might see more resolutions available, more capture options (SDI, Firewire, Composite, S-Video, Component, etc…), but otherwise the system is pretty much identical to the old version but with new stuff added. You should be fine. The Avid interface doesn’t change until you get to DS.

I’m not sure there’s any website like that, unfortunately. When I just started out (about 2-3 years ago) I tried to find something that would show me the flash and flair, but came up empty handed (except for Grinner’s tutorial, which is great).
If anyone has a transition trick, hopefully they’ll post it here. I can make some time to put everything together into one document and we should be able to make it one long post and have it stickied at the top of the forum. If there’s enough interest and response it could be a great little resource. I’m game! I’ll start getting my favorite transitions on paper and I’ll post them here when done…please, everyone else join in!

Reinstall Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. Vista isn’t supported and likely won’t be for a very long time.
