Anyone know of any Transition Tricks?
Posted by Milton Hockman on March 13, 2007 at 1:34 amI know you can utilize Add Edits to create a transition with an effect.
For example, adding an edit 10 frames before and after a cut and using a Levels Adjustment to create a Camera flash type of effect.
Does anyone else know of any other cool transitions like these? Or know of a website that shows you all of the cool ones that I see on t.v. all the time?
i am also looking for tips on slowing down, speeding up, and posterizing time on clips too.
thanks for your help!

March 13, 2007 at 5:37 pmi have seen those. I am looking for more of common cool transitions. Like the one where a clip will go from 100% size to 400% size on a cut and the next clip goes from 400% size to 100%size.
you know, all of those common transitions you see on TV. But looking for a resource that shows how to do them all.

March 13, 2007 at 10:48 pmYou do understand that you can place effects on the layer above the clip…therefore, allowing you do copy and paste them in your timeline. The glow effect work very well with that. Also, I belive Grinner posted a very handy animatte transisition.

March 14, 2007 at 1:16 amIf you want to go from 100% to 400%:
1. Add a cut point about 5 frames before your cut, then 5 frames after.
2. Add a Resize. First keyframe at scale 100%, keyframe right before the cut to 400%, go forward one frame, set a keyframe at 400%, last keyframe at 100%. Select the track, collapse it onto itself or simply Alt+Add a submaster effect. Open your effect editor, Alt+Drag it to a bin to save it. It will be saved “With Source”. Now you can load it into your source monitor like a clip and cut onto a filler track over every cut you want to use it on! This will work with all effects added to filler.Check out Grinner’s transition tutorial (click his head on the top of the forum and you should find it at the bottom of the page that opens).
What kind of transitions are you wanting? Can you give us an example on some popular TV shows/movies/commercials?

March 14, 2007 at 2:33 ami could go through t.v. shows and look at the transitions and figure them out….but that would take too much time.
i am looking for a tutorial site that will give a transition tip just like you did on your post…….start 5 frames before….up the %….end 5 frames after…..etc.
i see t.v. commercials all the time on ABC that use this style with the GLOW BLUR effect. On THE NANNY they use this type of timing with the DIRECTIONAL BLUR effect.
TRAVEL TV uses the 100-400% 400-100% effect a lot.
These are standard, but i know there are other cooler transition effects out there. Also, i am not that familiar with Posterizing Time liek they do on PRIMETIME SPECIALS all of the time.
I am looking for a no-brainer type of site that gives all of these tips away for free, so that i don’t have the step frame by frame on recorded t.v. commercials or shows to figure out how they do them.
does this make sense?

March 14, 2007 at 12:29 pmI’m not sure there’s any website like that, unfortunately. When I just started out (about 2-3 years ago) I tried to find something that would show me the flash and flair, but came up empty handed (except for Grinner’s tutorial, which is great).
If anyone has a transition trick, hopefully they’ll post it here. I can make some time to put everything together into one document and we should be able to make it one long post and have it stickied at the top of the forum. If there’s enough interest and response it could be a great little resource. I’m game! I’ll start getting my favorite transitions on paper and I’ll post them here when done…please, everyone else join in!

March 14, 2007 at 12:31 pmIgnore my post above. I see another thread to compile everything has been started.
I really need to look at all the posts before I start typing. 🙂

March 20, 2007 at 5:30 amPick up the book, “Avid Xpress DV and Xpress Pro on the Spot” by Steve Hullfish, Chris Phrommayon, and Bob Donlon (formerly of the Cow, now of Adobe). Filled with tons of quick tips and tricks…several on effects and transitions included.
Take care.
