Why such an old system? The Symphony Meridien’s were hardware based, and they no longer make them. If one of the boards goes out you might have trouble finding a replacement, and if you do it could be very, very expensive since they’re getting harder to find.
Set yourself up with a new Media Composer with Nitris DX or Symphony Nitris or Symphony Nitris DX. You’ll have more realtime capabilities than you’ll know what to do with. Luma key, chroma key, multiple streams of HD playing back in realtime. It’s nice.
And your friend who said a realtime luma key isn’t possible–sound’s like he’s not familiar with Avid. There are systems where it may not be possible, but it’s been possible in Avid since the Meridien days.

The footage will transfer fine, as long as the resolution you capture to is available on your boss’s Avid. If your boss is capturing DVCPro at 2:1, it sounds like they’re on a Media Composer like your friend, so there’s nothing to worry about.
The issue would be if you captured 2:1 on a Media Composer and tried to take it to an Xpress Pro system. All of your media would say Wrong Format because 2:1 isn’t available on Xpress Pro.
Otherwise, just take your external drive, copy the media to your boss’s media drives, delete the database files, copy your bin to the project folder on your boss’s computer, and open Avid. It will rescan the media drives, rebuild the databases, and relink the media to your Bin. Edit!

Do you have demo plugins that have expired? I’ve heard of them causing problems as the program loads.
You could remove all audio suite plugins and see if it boots. If so, start adding them back in one at a time until you find the culprit.

They should update just fine. Back them up in case, and if they get corrupt just make new projects with the same names as the old ones and transfer the bins into them at the finder level.

It will run on Vista starting today with the release of MC 3.0. It will also run on Leopard and Windows XP (32-bit only in XP).

Click the Use Avid DV codec option on export. See if it fixes the issue.

If you’re running this off a firewire drive that might be why it’s choking on playback. Do you have an internal drive (that’s not your system drive) that you could transfer the media to? You should be able to play DVCProHD footage off a Sata drive, but I’m not sure about firewire.

Sure you can! Ctrl+Alt+Y . It will ask what track you want to add. Select 1. It will tell you that track already exists, do you want to Cancel or Insert. Choose Insert and all tracks move up one and you’ll have a new, blank V1.
