Transferring Captured Footage from one Avid to Another
Hi Folks,
I’m working for a new company that involves a lot of travelling in and out. I’ve just heard that the boss is away so I don’t have access to the Avids at work. I’m just wondering is it possible to capture footage on a friends Avid MC to an external hard drive and transfer it my bosses Avid and media hard drives. The footage is for a specific project with the majority of the footage shot on DVCPRO captured at 2:1 through component. I’m capturing SD footage from a Z1 via firewire. As far as I know capturing the footage from firewire will be the same quality as it would be through my bosses AJ-D455 deck.
So just to simplify:
Can the captured footage be brought in to the project Avid with minimum fuss (i.e. drag and drop)?
Will the Footage captured via firewire have to be redigitised by Avid through the import command in the project because of the different capture settings in the project?

The footage will transfer fine, as long as the resolution you capture to is available on your boss’s Avid. If your boss is capturing DVCPro at 2:1, it sounds like they’re on a Media Composer like your friend, so there’s nothing to worry about.
The issue would be if you captured 2:1 on a Media Composer and tried to take it to an Xpress Pro system. All of your media would say Wrong Format because 2:1 isn’t available on Xpress Pro.
Otherwise, just take your external drive, copy the media to your boss’s media drives, delete the database files, copy your bin to the project folder on your boss’s computer, and open Avid. It will rescan the media drives, rebuild the databases, and relink the media to your Bin. Edit!

Yes he has got Media Composer and an Adrenaline. I’ll be capturing DV in the drop down box in the capture window. Is it a messy affair to copy that footage in to the project. I’ve tried to search for a tutorial on a similar subject to this with no luck. The guy I work for isn’t what I’d call an expert in everything Avid and I would presume to be hesitant at what I’d like to try. It’s just that the capture process can be tedious and I’d like to speed up my workflow. For some reason his deck isn’t that responsive to batch capturing logged clips either because clips don’t have enough preroll between them or it fails to find the marked IN point despite a continuous time code. I’ve tried to search for a tutorial on a similar subject to this with no luck.
