Hi there Joe, Thanks so much for your reply. That’s a great steer to the 90 day trial. I will give it a try. Am dying to find out if I can now edit my own footage without the massive rendering processes that I had to go through with Version 7.
I will work through all the tips you have given here and the tutorials Terry recommended and it looks like I will be pleasantly surprised with the current version X.
Best regards,
Mike Halliday

Please excuse the duplication guys…being sure I had posted but that it must have failed somehow since I couldn’t see my post, I wrote it out again…not realising that the reason I could not see my original post was that it was being moderated! …must try harder!

Hi there Bob, Terry and Joe,
I wonder if I could ask a bit of very basic advice, which should fit into your narrative here…
I used FCP 7 for several years at work, and had my own copy at home on my macbook pro. I now have a Retina 15inch early 2013 so 64bit and running Mojave 10.14.6.
When FCP X came in and Apple stopped supporting version 7, we went over to Quantel QEdit Pro – now Grass Valley Rio – and I stopped using my FCP 7 after upgrading to the faster computer. I had a look at Adobe Premier and the thing that immediately impressed me was that it can work with phone camera footage – MP4(which I understand can vary greatly under the bonnet) – “natively” ie without converting it. With FCP7 I remember having to render for hours to work with my phone camera footage and then the render would come undone and I would have to keep repeating it…
Can you tell me; with the latest FCP X can it work with phone camera footage “natively” or will I still have to long winded rendering in the time line…?
I am trying to make my mind up between Premier and the latest FCP…and I loath the idea of paying a monthly fee. Was bad enough with the original Avid back up deal that we were obliged to have many years ago!
Do you know; if I already have a licence for FCP 7, would I have to pay the ‘new’ price for version X…? At GBP300 it would be the same price I paid for my first FCP (3) second hand!
Can I store my media on an external hard drive and edit like that with version X?
Then finally; the original version X was pretty much a non-starter for professional editing when it first was released…is the latest version of X getting close to the dexterity of version 7?
Am currently enjoying some of the tutorials you linked to Terry so thanks for posting them.
Grateful for any advice/pointers.
Best regards,
Mike Halliday

Hi there Bob and Terry, I wonder if you can advise me…I have already noted those tutorials from Terry. I used to edit at work using FCP7 and had my own licensed home copy. Then when apple brought out version X and stopped supporting 7, work went over to Quantel Q-edit Pro – now Grassvalley Rio and dumped FCP. At the time FCP version X was a non starter professionally and so I didn’t bother with it. I did however have a play with Premier Pro and the biggest breakthrough I could see was that it edited seamlessly (“natively”? with my cameraphone footage (“MP4” – which I understand could be a number of different varieties). Can you tell me; does the latest FCPX edit current cameraphone footage? …or would I have to hours of rendering which used to come undone and have to be re-rendered on FCP7…?
Would you know: can I upgrade to version X from 7 or do I have to buy it new (GBP300).
At this stage I am looking to get back to editing at home and trying to decide whether to go Adobe Premier or FCP…and I hate the idea of monthly subscriptions… GBP is what I originally paid for my first version (3) of FCP so I guess that is not a bad price to be paying for it now…but would I have to buy lots of other software to go with it in order to do some basic effects and use phone camera footage? I am presuming that it can be used by now to pretty much the same standard of editing as version 7 could when X was first introduced…?
Really grateful for your advice.

Michael Halliday
