Storyboard Quick is pretty good. Learning curve is shallow so you can get to work quickly.

FWIW, here’s a just completed web pilot that utilizes both Color Finale and Core Melt plug ins. Great results with both. Really speeds the workflow not having to go out of the NLE for color correction and a lot of effects, motion tracking, etc.

I like FCPX quite a bit. We switched over 3.5 yrs ago and it’s been good and getting better ever since.

The ONLY real issue I have is having to play in the outside/real world with it. Clients still hold their noses when we say we use it and it’s still tough to source freelance editors since it still has a bad rep. That’s nothing to do with editing but it is still a real challenge we are up against. And one we wouldn’t have if we switched to Pr or Avid.

That’s why overt efforts on the part of AAPL are so welcome. And lack thereof so fraught.

That’s great, Bill. Thanks for painting a great picture and for shedding light on the FCPX team. Seems like it was a terrific event.

Don’t know why AAPL goes to such lengths to hide their team and commitment to the pro community—events like the one you describe help us all justify our commitment to the FCPX platform, which is still a tough position to maintain in the face of agencies and editors who haven’t seen the light.

Are there any detailed summaries/videos coming from attendees? Would have loved to be able to have gone.

In particular–what was the trip to Apple like? Did you come away reassured that FCPX has the love/resources from HQ to continue to grow and improve?

Would love to get your thoughts and thanks.

FWIW, (and I know this sounds like BS but…) I have a friend in the biz who has a contact at Apple. What he said was that Apple would be making a significant announcement re: FCPX around NAB.

I have absolutely no details and no way to confirm. Completely unsubstantiated. But: it made my heart leap a little and if Apple is coming out with enhancements for X, announcing them right around NAB certainly makes sense.

I know that if they don’t, a lot of folks will be very disappointed.

    We shall see.

  • I used to to do Raid 5 and never had problems–but always a little worrisome if the drive went down.

    What I do now is:

    1. Keep a copy of original cam source media on an external bus powered drive–500gb, 1 tb. I have a library of a couple of dozen of them.

    2. I transcode/optimize the media onto a large thunderbolt drive 8-12 tb.

    3. I have a second, usual less expensive 8-12 tb drive that I clone from the main drive at the end of each sessions.

If my A drive fails, I can immediately go to my B-drive. If they both fail I’m screwed but then I still have the original camera media. Seemed like a good compromise between cost and peace of mind.

There is no one perfect solution. At least with this workflow, I have two good copies plus cam original. Raid 5, only had 1 good copy.

  • Video review is anathema to sport. Sports are about what the human body and mind can do; not technology. Bad calls are part of the game. They are imperfect. It can be frustrating but that’s what makes it exciting, too.

One of the reasons I love soccer is that is so elemental and fundamental. No commercials, time outs, headphones, play cards strapped on to wrists. Did I mention no commercials?

If you want to get up and get a bag of Doritos in the kitchen every 10 minutes, don’t watch soccer. You’ll have to wait at least 45 minutes (plus stoppage time).

Hey, the USMNT looked pretty sharp against Nigeria. And finally Altidore made it rain. Finally. I think it actually is possible they advance out of the group stage. 50/50.

FYI, Klinsman is an FCPX user.
