I was able to work on the native HEVC files without transcribing to pro res.

My question is really: is there an image quality boost with HEVC vs H.264? Or is the benefit solely the smaller file size….

Making technology easier and less expensive for anyone to use is a good thing.

And in a world where every person can shoot and edits together a crappy video, actual talent, skill and creativity will rise and be compensated.

If the only reason you can make a living at it is because it’s a pain in the butt to learn and the gear is costly–well, you might as well become a lawyer or CPA (pain in the butt to learn and the entry investment is costly).

All that said, I STILL want Apple to go to NAB 🙂

Yes. Apple pro apps and hardware should attend NAB.

For Adobe and Premiere, pro apps ARE their business.

For Apple, the pro market is now a rounding error. Consequently, for pros who use their hardware and software, there is always, always the nagging doubt that they will just exit the market. Especially because their pro apps are often seen as lagging the industry and missing key features–I’m talking about you, FCPX and Motion. (And I’ve been using them since 2000).

Attendance at the biggest industry shows would reassure users (and prospective users) that they, well, care about the pro market and have no intention to leave. That alone is why they should attend.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can walk into your nearby Apple store, touch the product, talk with Apple employees.

Pro app users are left to commune in solitary (if terrific) online forums. Attending NAB would show that Apple really, really likes us, dammit!

    Thanks for the insight.

Wonder if that is a best practice in general–or suited best to the power of the iMac Pro.

I’m on a 2013 nMP and wonder if I would get a performance boost as well by keeping libraries and caches on the internal SSD and continue to keep media on external raids….

    Interesting.

You mention you keeping libraries and caches on internal SSD–presumably with media on external drives.

Anyone else doing it? Are there performance gains?

I’ve been keeping everything, including the library, on external 7200 RPM Raids.

Wonder if there’s a performance boost by splitting library and media on internal and external drives. Thoughts? Experience?

  • Thanks–although there was no link to the page…

  • Thanks–don’t think it works with recent OS.

I’m giving the free Splashtop a try. But open to other options, too.

I just sent in a bug report on the rec 709 color wheel flaw. Too bad. I really do like the functionality and GUI of the wheels but you end up chasing your tail when you start using them. So: back to the color board/Color Finale/Chromatic for now.

    Hope they fix this fast.

    Thanks for the input.

One question: I wonder what kind of speed boost one would get adding an AMD Vega to the 2017 iMac via an eGPU?

Diminished gains to be sure. My interest is in seeing what the gains/benefit are of the eGPU/AMD/$1000 kludge vs. $5-$10K iMac Pro.

We’ll need the new FCPX with official eGPU support on the next High Sierra version to really see if there’s any value there or not.
