In truth, I was a bit surprised. But yeah, I just called ’em up. They sent emails to follow up. I uploaded files to them. I was kind of amazed, really.

But I would imagine the FCP X team at Apple has had their butt kicked and (hopefully) management has told them to make it right. Now.

The tech support is one indication. The fast/good updates is another. The sneak peaks/roadmap to celebrities like Larry J. Those are good things.

Wow. This is the most “passion” I’ve seen on the cow in a long time. But: Apple totally screwed the launch of X AND scared the bejeesus out of every FCP 7 editor who had learned and invested in master the tool of their business. One of the worst bungles the company has ever made.

That said, while not a perfect fit for every pro/working editor, I have found that X suits my needs and, perhaps most importantly, it makes editing Faster and more Fun. More enjoyable. And gives me more time to focus on the cut.

It still is immature in a lot of ways and need to improve. But I think it has a lot to recommend it, if you are willing to put away your 7 skill set and muscle memory and try something new.

Two more things: I’ve had issues with X and have had no problem getting a tech person to talk with me. Four times. No service contract, nothing. Just called them up. Very short wait. That suggests to me they want to support their customers ’cause they are literally offering free support.

Also: being that Apple is huge and hugely profitable, they have the resources to stay in this line of business for the long term. Their cagey approach to PR leaves one wanting more, but their public actions indicate their commitment. But the screwed up launch still leaves many people leery. Which is perfectly understandable.

Thanks. FWIW, I found I got a big performance boost once I exited the sparse disk concept AND separated my project and event folder, with the former being on internal system disk.

Re: Disk Images. I loved the concept. But I was having terrible performance issues with a XDCAM 100bmps multi cam project and the first thing Apple told me to do was copy the event out of the disk image. Their official policy seems to be “don’t use disk images.” Why? They couldn’t say, just that it was part of the trouble shooting protocol. So, now I am not using sparse disk images which is a shame.

Any one with some real computer chops care to comment?

keep the updates on the updates coming. Seems like some see better performance with MB Looks and .0.4 and some seeing worse.

    Thanks.

I’m in the middle of two project so I’m going to wait until they are out the door but I would really appreciate hearing how the update with Looks goes for you.

    Good luck. Fingers crossed.

Folks: would appreciate hearing from others who update to 10.0.4 AND update MB Looks. I’m still on 10.0.3. I’m working on a project where I definitely need MB Looks Cosmo plug so am not sure it’s safe to get back in the water yet.

    Thanks.

Nope. It was a desperate move (after trashing prefs, copying projects, etc).

I was on the phone a lot with apple and even uploaded files. I was using 100mbps XDCAM from a nana flash, that X chose not to/did not need to optimize to pro res (I think that might have been the issue).

I did get a big gain in performance when I inadvertently put my project file on my internal system drive (it had been on an external eSata drive, along with the event). It’s the old FCP7 paradigm for organization, which I had thought was moot with X.

That said, under .03, still got lots of crashes and beach balling. I am eager to upgrade to .04 but am in the middle of two projects so will wait a bit (and I’m not sure the sheffield plugs work with X so still need MB Looks/Cosmo).

Hmm. I’ll have to give it a try. In general, I really like the FX Factory concept and some of the specific plug ins. However, I was having major performance issues on a recent multi cam project and out of desperation, uninstalled FX Factory.

I wonder–anyone using 10.0.4 with FX Factory? Everything copasetic?

Thanks for the info. One last question: did you get the Apple version of the card or go with the non-apple version. I’ve heard the only difference is you don’t get the apple boot screen with the non-apple version.

As a side note, I’ve heard the new .4 update generally helps performance but I can’t go there yet as I need Magic Bullet Looks (the Cosmo tool for wrinkles) on a current project and the new update breaks the link with MB Looks.
