[Steve Connor] “Not really, it won’t run FCPX so it’s irrelevant ☺”

This forum has often covered debates about FCPX alternatives. After all that was the ‘..or not’ question this forum was founded on. So of course it is relevant to talk about hardware alternatives to MacPro as it affects the many editors that use X, CC, Resolve, Avid etc.

It is very much part of the ongoing debate also for the Hackintosh users who also frequent this forum. So yes this hardware can run FCPX. It’s just hardware. Chose your OS and run whatever you want. But don’t pretend this forum is here just for just FCPX users. Never has been so stop trying trying to railroad it from its original debate purposes.

ProResRAW as a camera format is very exciting. The data rate looks to be a bit under ProRes422HQ which means you can get slightly more on your cards but with RAW you can dig into the data and change things like ISO and color balance in post, get the full dynamic range unlike ProRes422HQ which is 10 bit.

This must be a camera originating format only so the other flavors of ProRes for finishing codecs remain important. It looks like the data compression may be higher than the current 4:1 cDNG that the Blackmagic cameras now shoot so if BM adopt this format, it will be very useful. If however it only works on a Mac with FCPX installed then I hope the industry avoid it as proprietary codecs are such a pain. Maybe we will see a DNxRAW next.

Of course you can also re-use your rack mount case, power supply, cables and monitors to make the rebuild even cheaper.

4 days to setup? I usually do my rebuilds every four years and it takes less time than that to do a rebuild and complete install the OS & drivers. I would tyoically have the old mobo out and the new one fully installed including onboard RAIDs in one day. The the OS & drivers install might take up a few hours. The install of software, networks and other hardware peripherals like Decklink cards is then the same.

[Scott Thomas] “The chart isn’t showing the rising or falling of sales. It’s showing the percentage of Apple’s revenue.”

    Ah thanks for that qualification.

Interesting how the chart shows computer sales stopped falling and then rose briefly with the change to Intel chips before the iPhone & iPad started the next slide.

I would believe that Apple might go totally their chip for all battery powered Macs. I suspect they will stay with Intel or AMD for whatever is their desktop. Maybe by 2020 they will only have one desktop. There might be one more MacPro but I would never base a business decision that needed powerful desktops on expecting Apple to provide for my needs. I can see an end for Apple in this market and they can quietly retire OSX and be totally a portable iOS company from 2024 onwards.

If this latest rumor is true, then I guess it spells the end of a dream for an ongoing MacPro or similar performance machine. I would see the main advantage for Apple being that they could have a single OS and better power consumption that says much about the direction to portable computing not desktops. They would also be very much on their own with GPUs also which again matters more in the grunt box world. I would say this is basically a surrender of that arena to Win & Linux.

Win 7 is not supported, only Win 10. This doesn’t mean it won’t work but bear that in mind. Also the most important information is your graphics card model and RAM. Blackmagic have information on minimum system requirements to run Resolve. Worth checking.

Saving presets doesn’t change the defaults but all you do is select your preset, name and render. I don’t even care what the defaults are. I always just select the appropriate saved preset and I have a few or use the Vimeo/ Youtube presets. I usually have a few different render needs from DNx masters to Vimeo versions and client uploads. There is no such thing as a useful default to me.

[Tero Ahflors] ” If only there was this tome of information that would have every feature of the program explained in it.”

To be fair Tero, has anyone (apart from your good self) read the whole manual? I prefer to dip in from time to time before embarrassing myself on a forum but much of Resolve and other software I have discovered without completely reading and memorising the manual.

Just setup everything you want and save it as a custom preset. Then it’s just click select on Delivery, name and render.
