Only if you don’t embrace the Fusion page. I’m guilty of that but I have watched a few tutorials recently and there are some cheap templates to buy online from enthusiastic online trainers that show the power of Fusion. I have been overcoming the previous title limitations with Boris CC but Fusion in Resolve as it now stands is an immensely powerful title tool in the same way the grade page is. Just need to break the ice with a node based compositor like we all did with node based grading years ago.

Surely the only argument for ‘almost there’ is one of the four pages in Resolve. If you only judge the software by the edit page then you might think Resolve is playing catchup. Well of course it is. Basic edit functionality with a text generator is less than three years old. Performance was slow. It was a basic editor attached to a mature grade tool. Since then development of just the edit functionality has been faster than any NLE. At the same time they have dropped in Farilight and Fusion. Sure work in progress but when we talk about catchup in audio, compositing, titles & VFX almost everyone else is now playing catchup. No NLE is close to Resolve for grading so my perspective is Resolve is getting ahead of all in terms of an integrated collaborative tool.

I get that editors here are fixating on the one page where Resolve lags but given where they have come from and the pace of development, it’s hardly fair to think that we have been waiting for Resolve to finally catchup when it is arguable ahead in all but a few edit functions. I was joking the other day that it has been a month since the last significant upgrade to Resolve and bang they drop this latest one.

I always import the media maintaining folder structure before importing the xml. I find Resolve handles that better.

In any cross platform, cross software transfer there will be a couple of files that need help for many reasons. If you have file names that have characters that are illegal or confusing (full stops) from mac to Win to Linux then you will have to relink them manually. The other gotcha is fonts. If you are transferring title generators pre load the font you used. These days editors either ask or just include the font on the hand over drive

More an more post facilities are switching to PC so they can get the form factor and GPU processing they need. Apple isn’t making machines as suited to the processing and speed grunt that facilities require. Never assume you will be staying within the Mac OS environment. Those days are over.

Any circumstances? On a recent series shot with multiple Sony F5s we renamed all the camera original clips as each folder reset the file name to C00001. The post worked perfectly with all the correct files relinking. If we hadn’t renamed the relinking would have been a catastrophe.

The key is to rename before any ingest and edit in Avid, Pr etc. Unique file names should be the rule. I agree, do not rename after editing but before, with the Sony cameras and Canon C100 you must.

The audio is dual mono so fixing by throwing one side away is correct. Panning hides the problem. The phase error remains and when mixed in with other correct audio cancels just that audio when listening in mono. I had this exact disaster when a friend did the pan fix and uploaded videos which played on phones and small tablets with all the scene dialog cancelled out and the music & effects intact.

We had to go back in and fix it by deleting one side and panning the audio to centre. Much easier to do it when editing by cutting in just one side to a mono track.

You could try using the HSL to create a matte of just the highlight. Just dropper the highlights, turn off Hue & Sat so it is just picking luma. Adjust the matte to suit and then apply sharpen. I would do that in just one node after your grade node(s). That way you can check by turning that node on and off.

My guess is best case you are at the point where you drive is getting too full. A golden rule is to leave minimum 10% of your drive empty. Worse case is your drive may have some bad sectors or some other fault. Try to clear some more space and maybe also run a utility like Disk Warrior to see if there is a problem with the drive.

I should point out that I don’t even know if Disk Warrior still exists. As for upgrading from FCP6, well the logical upgrade path is to something else like Premiere, FCPX or Resolve. I’ve put my money on Resolve and I haven’t had to open FCP7 for years now.
