  • The primary problem I see is that a company that has a small but niche OS, refuses to support the major GPU company’s product. Given Win and Linux are the two major OS’s, Nvidia probably isn’t too fussed but from our narrow view of the world, the Mac OS seems important. When I look at the available hardware and OS options, it also doesn’t matter as the software I use is all cross platform and I prefer Nvidia GPUs so Apple are the loser in my case and for probably an increasing number of users.

Maybe Apple see it as way to niggle Adobe but Blackmagic clearly aren’t fussed. And surely Adobe will improve their performance on Macs. Again the problem is Apple’s attitude, expecting developers to adopt their standards and playing favourites. It’s one of the reasons they won’t be getting any money from me which I’m sure has them awake at night with worry. They better not get AMD offside or maybe then they will have sleepless nights. Meanwhile they are more focused on iPhone sales in China.

  • I haven’t licensed the onboard DCP software in Resolve. I always use Resolve to generate the JPG2000 files for OpenDCP so that may be the way to marry with DOM

No problem Terence. We all need help getting up to speed with both basic and complicated functions. Have you checked the Blackmagic free tutorials?

Go to their support page and scroll down the videos in the Latest Support Notes Column.

Also there are many good free YouTubers who have some good instructionals. Casey Faris, Meisner Media and JayAreTV have lots of good stuff.

Manuals are there to help but it makes much more sense to watch others pull tricks and shortcuts or just explain signal flow and nodes.

  • You need to assign the audio at the clip level using Clip Attributes. That way the six channels are correctly assigned by their L, C, R, Ls, Rs, & LFE. When you play the file you should see the six channels correctly metering.

As to whether you output mono or poly wav to make the DCP depends on what the DCP authoring software is that you are using. I use OpenDCP which likes mono files.

I can see V1 has been deselected and V2 is not selected as the edit destination. Are you saying you can’t select V2 (ie get the red box around the V2 above the lock icon)? The fact that you can see the jpg and load it into the source viewer indicates that Resolve is happy with the jpg. Maybe you can load the jpg so we can see if it works on another Resolve system.

Also any details on the version you are using

I had a head start with my father who designed microwave communications gear including broadcast TV links, plus working in broadcast telecine 1976, then dabbling in digital audio from 1984, through to digital video when it first appeared. Color space, bit depth and technical specs have been bread & butter for many years and it does take some time to get your head around what it all means.

If it’s any consolation, I still have to bone up on the changing landscape of high dynamic range variances and compatibility in all the different color spaces. Never stop learning

[Terence Christopher] “I thought that 4K required 64 bit processing..”

I think you might be confused by Operating System bit depth, file wrap formats like Quicktime and the actual bit depth process of digital video. Resolve is 32 bit floating point which has a greater dynamic range than 64 bit fixed. It has more than enough for a typical 10 bit 4.2.2 4k digital video signal

Maybe a screen shot of your timeline and the stills bin (set to thumbnails view).

You’ve tried just dragging to the timeline from the bin?

It sounds like your mouse click functions have changed. Check both the mapping in Resolve and your computer mouse settings.

You can always copy forward a grade from the previous clip with the + key.

Sound Devices have free software Wave Agent, that can create poly wavs from single wavs and single wavs from poly amongst other nice timecode things.
