The problem is that the disk names are different

  • Are you rendering in HDV or have you set the render to ProRes in the sequence render tab? It sounds about right for HDV and it should be a bit faster going to ProRes. An Orange line suggests some heavy rendering required so slower than real time is to be expected.

Try adjusting the distort to get the edges right. It will only require a small stretch and hopefully won’t make the women’s bottoms wider than they actually are.

If it does looked stretched and unnatural, a small increase in size of the overall clip in the basic motion tab which will zoom the edges out but clip headroom slightly more. You may need to trim centering to get an optimal framing.

FCP saves the file path to a specific drive. Because the drives are not clones, this means that it is normal to have to reconnect when the project is opened and needs to reference files on a different named drive.

It should mean all files always need reconnecting and have nothing to do with changing the name when you save as or changing to FCP7. It is important to rename with the date as a good way of telling projects apart. Keeping the same name runs the risk of one overwriting the other.

I think you will always have reconnect issues. It is a nuisance but should be fairly simple. Unless the two drives are absolutely identical (one is a clone of the other) that will always be the case.

Wow old thread! I am not sure if Michael Hancock is likely to chip in here but I have historically run two versions of Final Cut with different operating systems by installing a second internal bootable drive with different OS and software. This is how I would approach an AVID/ Tiger – FCS/Leopard install.

Don’t bother with disk partitioning as with two boot drives it is easy to choose which one you want to boot by holding the alt key on startup and selecting either drive. Also if a drive goes belly up you have only lost one, not the whole shooting match.

Is your drive a clone with the same disk name or just a copy of the folders and files? When you first opened the project did you have to reconnect files?

It was foolish of the producer to change to FCP7 mid project. Although she can read your projects, she can’t easily make any adjustments and send you a project to open without using XML. Nothing wrong with the project files being renamed as a ‘save as’ function. Is that what you are doing?

Of course render files at your end won’t be on the producers drive so they will alwyas have to be redone. Are the files that want to be reconnected clips that you have applied a render to? In other words can you see a pattern in the files that need reconnecting?

I would stick with ProRes. In PAL, DV codecs are lower field and a pain. FW800 drives have no problem with ProRes and will outperform DVCPro50

Lots more info required. Is everything 25 fps? What is the codec used on the “PAL stuff”? What was the path from your sequence to iDVD? Once we sort if the problem is in the sequence settings or a mismatch in fields with the different footage you can move onto making a decent DVD.

To do this you will need to use DVD Studio Pro. iDVD is not a decent tool for making DVDs from HD. Search this forum as the topic of going from a FCP sequence to making a good DVD in DVDSP has been covered many times. Getting the workflow from the HD timeline to SD DVD is not hard but many people make the mistake of using DV codec as an intermediate transcoding and then into iDVD which creates a further hit making the mpeg2 file. I suspect that somewhere in the process you have an incorrect field order in the HD footage.

Try the 3 way CC. It lets you adjust gamma and white & black levels plus color balance.

The older filters in FCP may be buggy. I have never used that filter, prefering more control with the 3 Way CC

Are you exporting a ProRes reference or XDCam. If you have rendered in ProRes it will have to re-render effectively the XDCam.

Check the codec of the export to see if it is giving you what you expect.
